Ekhaya Abattoir, a subsidiary of the Ekhaya Group of Companies, is a modern and fast-growing slaughtering and meat processing operation in Malawi. We are committed to the highest standards of humane slaughtering, meat quality, food safety, and animal welfare. To strengthen our slaughtering operations in Mpemba, we are seeking passionate, skilled, and results driven professionals to join our abattoir team.
ABATTOIR SUPERVISOR
Job Purpose
The Abattoir Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the daily slaughterhouse operations to ensure smooth workflow, compliance with food safety, hygiene, and animal welfare standards, and achievement of production targets. The role requires a hands-on leader who can supervise staff, maintain high quality standards, and support the Abattoir Manager in driving operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily slaughtering, dressing, and processing activities according to set schedules.
- Ensure compliance with animal welfare, hygiene, and food safety regulations.
- Assign duties and monitor performance of abattoir operatives, butchers, and cleaners.
- Facilitate, guide, enforce, and monitor compliance with training on slaughtering techniques, hygiene, and safety standards as conducted by the relevant Regulatory Authorities
- Ensure equipment, tools, and machinery are properly used, maintained, and reported for repair.
- Monitor production output and efficiency, minimizing wastage and downtime.
- Maintain accurate records of slaughter figures, inspection reports, and staff attendance.
- Work closely with veterinary officers and quality teams to ensure carcass grading and compliance.
- Enforce workplace safety procedures and use of PPE to minimize accidents and injuries.
- Investigate and report incidents, non-compliance, and operational challenges to the Abattoir Manager.
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance checks from regulators and internal auditors.
- Motivate, discipline, and evaluate staff performance, reporting outcomes to the Abattoir Manager.
- Ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and environmental standards are upheld in all areas of the abattoir.
Qualifications & Work Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Meat Processing, Food Technology, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in abattoir or meat processing operations, with supervisory exposure.
- Strong knowledge of slaughtering processes, hygiene, and food safety standards.
- Understanding of animal welfare regulations and humane handling practices.
- Good leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy (MS Office) and familiarity with production/traceability systems is an added advantage.

- Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
- Lead by example, with strong discipline and team management skills.
- Pay close attention to detail and uphold strict compliance with quality standards.
- Be proactive, results-driven, and adaptable in a fast-paced operational environment.
