Background
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates with proven hands-on accounting experience to fill the vacancy of Accountant at Exploits University Blantyre Campus.
JOB SUMMARY
The accountant is responsible for timely preparation of financial statements and coordinating all financial related activities for the University. He/she is expected to safeguard all university assets, management of finance system and reconciliation of University’s accounts. He/she closely supervises Assistant Accountant and ensure the utmost transparency.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Payroll preparation and ensuring tax obligations in regards to payroll are calculated, deducted and remitted on time.
- Management of creditors and suppliers accounts by ensuring all invoices are recorded, monthly production of the Aged creditors analysis and ensuring payment plans and monthly obligations are remitted.
- Management of the asset register by regularly updating the Asset registrar and ensuring all assets are tagged, recorded and evaluated yearly.
- Filing tax returns with the Malawi Revenue authority i.e PAYE, WHT and Corporate taxes.
- Effectively manage the University Cash flow while adhering to Exploits University’s policies.
- Preparation of draft audit report in readiness for external auditing.
- Management of expenditure in line with the budget.
- Ensures adherence to all monthly and yearly TAX obligations.
- Daily updating of the student’s management system.
- Calculate and administer terminal benefits entitlements.
- Calculate and verify annual leave records and action deductions.
- Yearly preparation of University budget and quarterly review of the budget.
- Reconcile bank statements, verify charges, monitor cash reserves, reconcile the accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Ensure transactions are properly recorded and entered into the computerised accounting system.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, quarterly reports, reports on variances, reports consisting of income statements and balance sheets.
- Maintain the computerised accounting system.
- Maintain the accounts payable and accounts receivable systems in order to ensure complete and accurate records of all moneys.
- Ensure all transactions are in line with government laws.
- Issue receipts in the absence of the assistant accountant.
- Any other duties assigned.
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
Qualifications ad Work Experience
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance/Accounting or related field from accredited institution recognized by National Council of Higher Education (NCHE). Those studying towards professional ACCA, CIMA qualifications and registered with ICAM will have an added advantage.
- Minimum 4 years working experience in accounting field under minimum supervision.
- Have good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Must be proficient in using QuickBooks online Accounting package.Primary & Secondary Schooling (K-12)

- Knowledge of Malawian tax legislation, accounting regulations and accounting practices and policies.
- Ability to work independently within deadlines, self-motivated and creative to achieve results.
- Excellent analytical and computer skills, including proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks.
- Outstanding organizational, reporting, data entry, and math skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work under extreme pressure and deliver within tight deadline.
- Be willing and able to meet tight deadlines and including working long hours when required.
- A team player who demonstrates high levels of honesty, confidentiality and integrity.
- A self-starter who is able to plan and manage his/her own work, takes initiative and strives to meet deadlines.
