Background

The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) is a professional, independent body of economists, founded in February 1999, aiming at providing evidence-based policy advice on economics related issues in the country. The association’s mission is to establish itself as the voice of the economics profession through a membership-focused service and evidence-based policy advice that benefits all its stakeholders. ECAMA envisions itself as the centre of excellence in economic policy analysis, advocacy and public awareness in economic issues. The Association works with different stakeholders including, academia, students, government, private sector, businesses and the media.

ECAMA is now seeking for a detail-oriented and organised Accounts Officer to join its finance team. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain accurate financial records and reports. This role requires proficiency in accounting principles, software, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Administration and Accounts Officer, the Accounts Officer will be expected to:

  • Prepare and analyse financial statements, reports, and budgets.
  • Maintain accurate and organised financial records, including journal entries, ledgers, and accounts receivable/payable.
  • Reconcile financial transactions, accounts, and discrepancies to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Prepare month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations, adjustments, and accruals.
  • Prepare and process invoices, payments, expense reports, and other financial transactions, including petty cash.
  • Prepare payroll processing, including data entry, calculations, and reconciliations.
  • Monitor and track financial transactions, expenses, and budgets to ensure compliance with regulations and Association’s policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as purchasing, sales, and operations, to coordinate financial activities and support business operations.
  • Provide support and assistance to auditors, tax professionals, and regulatory agencies during audits and examinations.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field obtained from an accredited university
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and bookkeeping procedures
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills
  • Ability to prepare, review, and reconcile financial reports
  • Good organisational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
  • Ability to follow financial procedures and maintain compliance with organisational policies
  • Member of ICAM or any recognized professional body
