Job Purpose
The Assistant Steel Fixer Foreman assists the Steel Fixer Foreman in planning, supervising, and coordinating all steel reinforcement activities on construction projects. The role ensures reinforcement works are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved structural drawings, bar bending schedules (BBS), project specifications, and quality standards.
The Assistant Steel Fixer Foreman assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Steel Fixer Foreman.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Site Supervision
- Assist in supervising daily steel fixing activities on site.
- Allocate work to steel fixers, assistants, and labourers.
- Monitor daily productivity and ensure work progresses according to programme.
- Ensure reinforcement installation complies with approved structural drawings and specifications.
- Supervise work in the absence of the Steel Fixer Foreman.
Reinforcement Works
Assist in supervising and carrying out:
- Receiving, sorting, and stacking reinforcing steel.
- Cutting and bending reinforcement bars according to Bar Bending Schedules (BBS).
- Fixing reinforcement for foundations, footings, columns, beams, slabs, walls, retaining structures, culverts, bridges, and drainage works.
- Installing mesh reinforcement and dowel bars.
- Positioning reinforcement using approved spacers and chairs to achieve specified concrete cover.
- Securing reinforcement with binding wire.
- Checking reinforcement before concrete placement.
Quality Control
- Ensure reinforcement complies with approved drawings, BBS, and project specifications.
- Verify bar sizes, spacing, lap lengths, anchorage, and concrete cover.
- Conduct pre-pour inspections with Site Engineers and Quality Control personnel.
- Identify and rectify defects before concrete casting.
- Minimise rework through close supervision.
Material and Tool Management
- Assist in estimating reinforcement requirements.
- Monitor steel usage to minimise wastage.
- Ensure reinforcement materials are properly stored and protected.
- Maintain steel fixing tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Report shortages or damaged materials and tools.
Planning and Reporting
- Assist in preparing daily work plans.
- Maintain records of:
- Labour attendance.
- Reinforcement installed.
- Materials received and used.
- Daily work progress.
- Report production, delays, and material shortages to the Steel Fixer Foreman.
Qualifications & Experience
- Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
- National Trade Test Certificate in Steel Fixing, Reinforced Concrete Works, or a related construction trade.
- National Certificate or Diploma in Building Construction or Civil Engineering is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in steel fixing on building or civil engineering projects.
- Previous experience leading a steel fixing gang or team is an added advantage.
- Experience on reinforced concrete structures such as buildings, bridges, culverts, tanks, and retaining walls is desirable.
Knowledge of:
- Reinforcement fixing methods and practices.
- Reading and interpreting structural drawings.
- Understanding of Bar Bending Schedules (BBS).
- Reinforced concrete construction techniques.
- Concrete cover and reinforcement detailing requirements.
- Occupational health and safety requirements.
- Material handling and storage procedures.
- Malawi construction industry standards.
Skills and Competencies
