Smile Life provides Group Life Assurance Schemes, Group Funeral Insurance Schemes, Group Credit Life Assurance Scheme, Family Funeral Plans (Thandizo Policy). The Mission of the company is to provide innovative and affordable life insurance products that are relevant and timely, to institutions, employers, associations, individuals and other stakeholders. Smile Life is currently inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill the key position of Chief Executive Officer – Designate .

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER – DESIGNATE

The CEO Designate will work hand in hand with and understudy the incumbent CEO who is proceeding on retirement soon. Subject to successful performance on a probation period of six months based on KPls, the CEO Designate will be confirmed and formally appointed as Chief Executive Officer on a three-year contract, subject to Regulatory approval.

CORE RESPONSIBILITY

The core responsibility of the CEO-Designate is to provide leadership and direction for Smile Life. He / She will work closely with Smile Life’s Board of Directors to provide strategic leadership and managerial direction for Smile Life to improve company performance and successfully achieve the strategic objectives of the organisation to maximise shareholder value in line with company policies, set and approved by the Board of Directors and Shareholders. The CEO-Designate will be charged with growing the business of Smile Life through innovation and development of high-quality strategies to deliver sustainable revenue growth through innovative products. The CEO will ensure effective implementation of strategy and report on results.

Ultimately the CEO-Designate will be responsible for:

  • Growing the business of Smile Life by providing sound leadership and direction for Smile Life through innovation and development of innovative insurance products;
  • Formulation, development and execution of appropriate strategies;
  • Generating and delivering sustainable revenue growth for the organisation;
  • Enhancing business competitiveness, commercial viability, profitability and shareholder value.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Leadership: Under the current CEO, work towards providing a clear vision, mission and direction for Smile Life, operate as a role model for the culture of Smile Life, understand and navigate organisational dynamics, develop a high performing collaborative team, provide the Board of Directors with trusted feedback and advice.

Collaboration: Working effectively and cooperatively with the current CEO and other stakeholders and establishing and maintaining good working relationships.

Strategic Planning: Under guidance from the current CEO, Developing short, medium and long term sustainable strategic plans that achieve the growth ambitions of the shareholders and delivers the client value propositions.

Financial Management and Control: Through the current CEO, Interfacing with the Chief Finance Officer regarding the development of the overall budget, approval, implementation and review. Providing leadership in the overall control, recording and reporting environment of Smile Life’s financial systems.

Operations Management: Under the current CEO, Managing reinsurance contracts, identifying and ensuring the use of most appropriate and robust operating systems and processes, and overseeing operations processes. Providing leadership to drive the strategic development of the market and reach volumetric growth of Smile Life’s products and services. Providing leadership in managing programmes that enable Smile Life to identify and drive new business and growth opportunities to ensure its future commercial competitiveness and profitability.

Business Growth and Retention: Under the current CEO, ensure that annual business growth per line of business is achieved, and ensuring the development of sustainable stakeholder and client relationship synergies to achieve business retention. Develop and maintain a strong positive reputation for Smile Life.

Risk Compliance and Regulatory Requirements: Under the current CEO, ensuring total compliance to regulatory requirements.

Human Capital Management and Development: Under the current CEO, overseeing, inter alia, the development of the most efficient and effective use of human capital to achieve set targets, ensuring the identification, management and retention of skilled human capital in line with the agreed strategy, and ensuring effective staff performance evaluation and management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or any social sciences from a recognised university, PLUS a bachelor’s degree in any of Business Administration, Actuarial Science, Accountancy, and Economics.
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience in the insurance industry at a senior management level;
  • Membership with the Insurance Institute of Malawi and Associate Membership of the Chartered Insurance Institute of the UK or Associate Membership of the ILA are essential.
