Jhpiego, is seeking a highly qualified Child Health and Immunization Technical Advisor to provide technical oversight of all child health and immunization activities and results. S/he will work closely with members of the IMCI and EPI units and partner counterparts in supported districts to strengthen health care services for children under five with a focus on prevention and management of leading causes of child mortality (pneumonia, diarrhea, acute malnutrition). S/he will be the lead MCGL CH/I technical specialist and should have deep clinical expertise and experience working with MOH and other stakeholders to implement child health programs in the Malawi context to reduce preventable newborn and child deaths and improve newborn and child health outcomes.
The Child Health and Immunization Technical Advisor will be based in Lilongwe, Malawi, reporting directly to the project Director.

Responsibilities
Technical
- Support MOH and local partners to develop and/or update or adapt evidence-based training materials, standards, job aids, and curricula, for delivery of high-quality child health and vaccination services
- Work with the project Technical Director and Technical Advisors to support integrated MNCH+N project activities
- Work with facilities to support articulation of clear measurable improvement aims and selection of QoC indicators using existing HMIS data for child health.
- Oversee onsite mentoring and capacity building for health workers [doctors, nurses, midwives], professional associations, and local partner staff, in provision of quality child health and immunization services
- Support district coordinators to provide technical assistance and capacity building to districts with a comprehensive childhood focus on interventions that helps children thrive through prevention and treatment of child illness e.g. Integrated Management of New-born and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) and the Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI)
- Oversee mentoring at the facility level to support health facilities to provide and sustain quality child health and immunization services, including prevention, screening and care of children with acute malnutrition
- Strengthen child health services at the community level working closely with relevant stakeholders.
- Support implementation of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness [IMCI] strategies and protocols.
- Support strengthening of availability of essential child health commodities in line with government priorities and global standards and guidelines.
- Lead innovative approaches for strengthening quality and efficiency of child health services
- Coordinate closely with other relevant U.S. Government (USG) and non-USG projects to identify synergies for improving child health and vaccination services
- Collaborate with Monitoring & Evaluation and QI colleagues to improve and monitor quality of child health and immunization services using routine health information system data as feasible
Program Implementation
- Lead development, implementation and monitoring of child health and immunization activities in the project integrated work plan, working in collaboration with MCGL staff, the MOH and partners to align with government priorities and ensure timely implementation
- Work with the M&E team to design and implement the M&E plan to regularly track data/results related to child health and immunization activities to adjust program activities as needed
- Collaborate with stakeholders and implementing partners to ensure that project activities are responsive to and align with national and USG priorities.
- Document successes, lessons learned and challenges in implementation, recommend intervention to address gaps and contribute to timely reporting of project child health and immunization activities
Required Qualifications
Essential:
- Medical graduate (MBBS, Child Health, Nursing and Midwifery ) degree with at least 8 years of experience providing pediatric clinical care and supporting the design and implementation of child health and immunization programs in the Malawi context (preferably at primary and hospital level).
- Up to date with global and locally recommended best practices in the provision of high-quality child health, and vaccination services.
- Experience with IMCI programming and providing onsite mentoring and coaching
- Excellent knowledge of the public and private health system in Malai and implementation environment
- Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments and conditions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong inter-personal and supervisory skills, including the demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and coach technical staff
- Ability to work independently and with team members and partners at all levels
- Strong analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to think and plan strategically
- Familiarity with U.S. Government’s administrative, management and reporting procedures and systems
- Fluency in written and spoken English strongly preferred
- Ability to travel across the program implementing areas up to 40%.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Professional proficiency in Chichewa is required.
- Willingness and ability to travel to all project implementation areas across the three regions of Malawi
