Overview

Jhpiego is an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University. Jhpiego develops innovations to enhance the capacity of health care workers, strengthening health systems and improve delivery of care towards improving the health and well-being. Jhpiego has been collaborating with the Government of Malawi and various partners in implementing a wide-range of interventions in maternal, newborn and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention and care and treatment, since 1999.

Jhpiego is seeking three (3) highly qualified Child Health and Immunization Technical Officers who will be responsible for the technical coordination and oversight of child health and immunization activities in their assigned districts. The officers will ensure integrated and high-quality service delivery and provide technical assistance at the district level.

The successful candidates will work closely with the MNH Technical Officer, Nutrition Technical Officer, other relevant technical and program staff, as well as district-level partners, to ensure seamless and coordinated implementation of child health activities.

The Child Health and Immunization Technical Officers will be based in the districts of Chikwawa, Mulanje, and Mchinji in Malawi, and will report directly to the Child Health and Immunization Technical Advisor.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership and program implementation

  • Work closely with Child health Advisor on planning and implementing scale-up strategies for high impact maternal and newborn interventions at facility and community level, including integrated management of childhood illnesses (IMCI), Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) and immunization services.
  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day execution of Child health activities in the districts, ensuring full alignment with MCGL project objectives, donor requirements, and national health priorities.
  • Lead the design, rollout, and monitoring of child health and immunization campaigns (routine immunization, PIRI, outreach, and mop-ups) in alignment with Malawi’s National Immunization Strategy and donor policies.
  • Foster collaboration with MoH EPI/IMCI units, district health offices, development partners, professional bodies, and community leaders.
  • Lead the development and execution of technical implementation plans and monitoring frameworks in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, donors, and stakeholders.
  • Strengthening referral linkages and feedback loops between community, primary, and referral health facilities for lifesaving services.
  • Lead on aspects related to project implementation, demand generation, and procurement support for child health commodities
  • Collaborate with MNH, Nutrition, QI, and MEL teams to ensure integrated planning, implementation, and monitoring of child health activities at district level.
  • Conduct supportive supervision in supported facilities and communities to support mentoring service providers.
  • Organize and support capacity building initiatives for service providers at facility and community lev
  • Assist finance staff to process and reconcile payment documentation from trainers, program, and management staff as well as from consultants

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Ensure effective use of child health and immunization data for program monitoring, review, and adaptive management.
  • Work closely with Monitoring & Evaluation teams to track program performance against established targets, ensure data integrity, and prepare timely, accurate reports to inform evidence-based decision-making
  • Document successes, lessons learned, and challenges contribute to timely quarterly and annual reporting at both district and national levels.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Work closely with the MOH and the relevant national authorities and key stakeholders to improve quality of care
  • Coordinate closely with other relevant U.S. Government (USG) and non-USG projects to identify synergies for improving child health quality of care

Strategic Growth and Development

  • Identify new innovative ideas in child health programing with proven effectiveness and efficiency as well as cost efficiency
  • Facilitate the development of best practices and help in coming up with integration of services within the child health program
  • Support any other strategic growth and partnership efforts for Jhpiego Malawi as may be required from time to time.

Communication & Knowledge Management

  • Contribute to documentation of outcomes, success stories, and lessons learned; contribute to scientific publications and conference abstracts.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing across teams, regions, and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to support implementation of communication strategies and ensure effective communication and documentation of lessons and best practices from child health programming.

Required Qualifications

  • Medical degree: Pediatrics, Public health, Nursing and Midwifery, MBSS (Advanced degree MPH, MD, Nursing will be an added advantage
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in implementing, and coordinating child health programs, preferably in Malawi or similar low-resource settings.
  • Experience working with government health structures, health facilities, and local partners.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in ETAT, IMCI, EPI and cold chain management. Familiar with national HMIS/DHIS2 systems.
  • Strong understanding of data utilization for program monitoring, quality improvement, and informed decision-making in child health.
  • Knowledge of strengthening referral systems within health facilities and between facilities and communities.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Professional proficiency in Chichewa is highly desirable.
