TEAM AND ROLE OVERVIEW

The Country Manager is being recruited, in a full-time position, to lead aQysta’s team in Malawi

The Country Manager is responsible to lead aQysta’s operations in Malawi, aligning local strategies with aQysta’s global goals, managing Malawian teams, budgets, sales, and compliance, while building key relationships and driving profitability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic responsibilities

  • Providing feedback on growth plans for Malawi when consulted by C-Suite; developing and documenting country scaling strategy aligned with overall growth objectives.
  • Leading annual plan creation with team leads, linking financial projections to activities; setting targets by sales channel; identifying key segments, customers, and products; developing contingency plans.
  • Allocating plans to team leads; defining KPIs with regular reporting; collaborating on alternatives for delays; delivering quarterly planned vs. actual reports.

Day-to-Day Operations

  • Managing daily operations through team leads, minimizing direct involvement.
  • Achieving targeted gross margins through sales and sourcing per annual plan.
  • Building supplier pipelines; onboarding partners; enforcing quality standards and protocols; documenting competitive sourcing; aligning with headquarters on market pricing.
  • Maintaining monthly cashflow forecasts and actuals; overseeing country budgets (e.g., personnel, operations, COGS); project cash flows from sales/projects; obtaining C-Suite approval for overruns.
  • Overseeing project activities, delivering milestones; process reimbursements; & cultivating partner relationships.
  • Contributing ideas; identifying potential collaborators (e.g., tech partners, NGOs); leading discussions with funders as local/country representative.
  • Ensuring timely drafts of financial statements and tax compliance; reviewing drafts; monitoring monthly P&L, cash flow, and balance sheets;
  • Providing strategic advising on recruitment and labour compliance in Malawi, performance management, employee relations, pay scale establishment, and fostering a positive work culture and policy implementation.

BACKGROUND AND SKILLS

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Agribusiness Management, International Business, or a related field
  • At least 8-12 years of progressive experience in senior management roles, including 5+ years leading country-level operations in agribusiness, supply chain, or multinational environments
  • Proven track record in strategic planning, P&L management, market expansion, and regulatory compliance across diverse regions
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with experience building partner, and farmer relationships
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel, data analytics, financial forecasting, ERP systems, and market intelligence tools
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, multicultural settings, managing cross-functional cross-cultural teams and driving profitability
  • Trustworthy, results-oriented problem solver with cultural adaptability
  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in Chichewa, or local languages is a plus
