Background

The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) is a professional, independent body of economists, founded in February 1999, aiming at providing evidence-based policy advice on economics related issues in the country. The association’s mission is to establish itself as the voice of the economics profession through a membership-focused service and evidence-based policy advice that benefits all its stakeholders. ECAMA envisions itself as the centre of excellence in economic policy analysis, advocacy and public awareness in economic issues. The Association works with different stakeholders including, academia, students, government, private sector, businesses and the media.

ECAMA is now seeking for a creative, flexible, and detail-oriented full-time Economist with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience. The ideal candidate should be results-driven, self-motivated, a team-worker, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is also expected to bring outstanding writing and strong interpersonal skills to the Association.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Economist, the Economist will be expected to:

  • Monitor, analyse and provide implications for different domestic, regional and global economic developments and trends.
  • Collect and analyse economic and economic-related data to inform research and policy recommendations from the Association.
  • Conduct surveys in order to gather necessary data and insights from relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop statistical and econometric models to be used for economic forecasting in order to predict future trends and inform decision-making.
  • Initiate and conduct research on topical economic issues to enhance the Association’s advisory rigour in the economy.
  • Draft weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual economic reports in order to communicate the state of current and expected economic landscape of the country.
  • Disseminate research findings to different stakeholders.
  • Facilitate partnership with the government, development partners, the private sector, the academia and the media.
  • Conduct marketing and fund-raising activities for the Association.

Qualifications, Competencies and Other Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in Economics from an accredited university
  • Active membership with ECAMA
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to prioritise workload
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Good understanding of reporting processes
  • High proficiency in statistical software such as Stata, E-views and R
