The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is incorporated under the Companies Act of the Laws of Malawi. Its core business is to procure, transmit and distribute electric power in Malawi as well as manage System Market Operations and Single Buyer in Malawi.
ESCOM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions currently existing in the Corporation.
Engineer – Data Center – 1 Position
Grade: ES7
Location: Blantyre
Supervised by : Senior Engineer – Data Center
Purpose of the Job
Career counseling services
Management of Data Center facility. Responsible for the health of the physical and virtual infrastructure within the data center.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Grid & Secondary Source Management: Monitor and perform first-line troubleshooting on the dual power feed system (Utility Grid + Secondary Source/ Generator).
- UPS & PDU Oversight: Conduct regular rounds to inspect Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for load balance and health.
- Emergency Response: Act as the primary onsite point of contact during power transitions or outages, following strict failover protocols.
- Client Support: Assist tenants with hardware racking, stacking, and initial “remote hands” troubleshooting.
- Cabling & Connectivity: Manage structured cabling (Fiber/Copper) and ensure cross-connects are labeled and routed according to standards.
- Physical Security: Ensure all colocation cages and racks are secured and that access logs are strictly maintained.
- Hardware Layer Maintenance: Troubleshoot physical server health (RAM, Disk, NIC replacements) that supports our cloud environment.
- Environment Monitoring: Use DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) tools to monitor temperature, humidity, and virtual resource spikes.
- Provisioning: Assist in the physical setup of new nodes for cloud scaling.
Attributes and competencies
- In-depth knowledge of electrical engineering concepts including AC/DC systems, three-phase power, UPS systems, generators, and power distribution networks.
- Strong ability to quickly resolve power-related issues and strictly adhere to safety protocols when handling hazardous equipment.
- Capable of clearly explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering /Telecommunications/Electronics/ Information management/ICT
- 3 Years relevant work experience
- Registered with MEI
