BACKGROUND
Transforming Africa’s Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) Program is a collaboration between RUFORUM, Mastercard Foundation, 12 African universities, including the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), and the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA). The main objective is to strengthen universities and TEVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient transformation of agriculture and agrifood systems. This goal will contribute to three strategic outcomes:
(a) Expanded equal work opportunities for young women and men in the agricultural sector
(b) Improved climate adaptive agricultural production and productivity, and
(c) Strengthened quality of higher agricultural education outcomes in training, research and innovation.
An exciting and challenging job opportunity has arisen at MUST for a suitably qualified and experienced individual to work in the position of Entrepreneurship and Business Development Officer tenable under the TAGDev 2.0 Program.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Entrepreneurship and Business Development Officer will be responsible for leading the implementation of the TAGDev program’s entrepreneurship and business development initiatives at the University.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Entrepreneurship and Business Development Officer will carry out the following key duties and responsibilities:
- Lead implementation of the entrepreneurship and business development model at MUST.
- Develop the university-level strategy and operational plans for the Business Incubation Hubs.
- Working closely with the Program Coordinator and Senior Program staff on Business Creation, Incubation and Jobs that promote the aims and values of RUFORUM related to business development.
- Coordinate the delivery of business development services to students, start-up owners and agricultural value chain stakeholders.
DELIVERY, TIMESLINES AND QUALITY
The Entrepreneurship and Business Development Officer will have the following deliverables, timelines and quality:
- Institutional entrepreneurship, investment and business development strategy developed.
- Monthly, quarterly and yearly reports on entrepreneurship, investment and business development activities.
- Proportion of enterprises/start-ups surviving.
- Business linkages, collaborations and networking initiatives undertaken.
- Contribution to additional financial resources mobilized for supporting entrepreneurship, investment and business incubation.
QUALIFICATIONS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE
Interested candidates should possess the following qualifications, attributes and experience:
- A Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences, Agribusiness, Economics or related fields from a recognised university.
- At least 3 years’ experience in a similar position with a reputable organisation.
- Experience in coordinating university-level incubation processes and mentorship of startups.
- Sound understanding of SMEs sector needs.
- Good interpersonal skills and communication skills.
- A good understanding of organisational and management operations.
- Ability and drive to manage complex processes.
REMUNERATION AND TENURE FOR THE POSITION
The successful candidate for the above advertised position shall be engaged on a two-year renewable contract based on satisfactory performance in line with the MUST’s Performance Management System and new job requirements. In addition, the successful candidate shall receive appropriate remuneration based on MUST’s prevailing rates.
PREVENTION OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND ABUSE
MUST has a zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. Therefore, applicants for the above vacancy must be willing to abide to the MUST Policy on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.
