Job Summary:
The Environmental Officer ensures that the organization complies with environmental regulations and standards. The role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental policies and practices. The officer works to minimize the ecological impact of construction activities, managing waste, pollution, and natural resource usage.
Key Responsibilities:
Compliance & Legislation:
- Ensure the project complies with local environmental laws (e.g., EPA guidelines, Municipal regulations) and international standards (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Liaise with regulatory bodies to obtain necessary environmental permits.
Environmental Management Plans:
- Develop and implement the Project Environmental Management Plan (PEMP).
- Establish procedures for waste management, dust control, noise mitigation, and water treatment.
Monitoring & Inspection:
- Conduct regular site inspections to monitor air quality, noise levels, and water discharge.
- Monitor the handling and storage of hazardous materials (e.g., fuels, chemicals).
- Investigate environmental incidents and implement corrective actions.
Reporting:
- Prepare monthly environmental performance reports for management.
- Maintain records of environmental non-conformances and corrective actions.
Training & Awareness:
- Conduct environmental induction training for all site personnel.
- Promote sustainability initiatives (e.g., recycling, energy reduction) among the workforce.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
Certification:
Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or ISO 14001 Internal Auditor certification is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in environmental management within the construction or heavy industry sector.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of pollution control legislation.
- Experience with environmental impact assessment (EIA) tools.
- Excellent observation and data analysis skills.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Zero major environmental non-conformances.
- 100% compliance with permit conditions.
- Reduction in waste sent to landfill vs. project baseline.
- Timely submission of environmental reports to authorities.
