Job Details

Position: Excavator Operator (2 Posts)

Location: Rumphi

Department: Construction / Civil Engineering

Reporting To: Construction Manager / Project Manager

Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract (12 Months)

Job Summary

The successful candidates will be responsible for operating excavators and related heavy equipment for excavation, trenching, grading, demolition, material handling, and other construction activities. The role requires adherence to safety standards, efficient equipment operation, and routine maintenance checks to ensure productivity and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators in accordance with project specifications and safety regulations.
  • Dig trenches, foundations, drainage channels, and other excavations.
  • Load soil, rocks, and construction materials onto trucks or designated locations.
  • Carry out land clearing, grading, and leveling activities.
  • Conduct daily pre-operation equipment inspections.
  • Report equipment faults and maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Maintain machinery cleanliness and good working condition.
  • Follow site safety procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Read and interpret site plans, drawings, and supervisor instructions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other site personnel.
  • Ensure efficient fuel usage and minimize equipment downtime.
  • Complete daily equipment operation logs and reports.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent.
  • Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate or relevant vocational training.
  • Minimum of 2–5 years’ experience operating excavators.
  • Good understanding of construction or mining operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety standards.
  • Ability to perform basic equipment maintenance checks.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in demanding site environments.

Key Competencies

  • Proficiency in operating excavators and heavy machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Good time management and reliability.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
