Background
St. Andrew’s International Primary School is an independent international school based in Blantyre, Malawi. The school offers the British National Curriculum and currently serves approximately 300 students from Toddler Class (14 months) to Year 6. Our diverse teaching staff comes from various parts of the world, and we are committed to providing a high-quality, holistic education in a dynamic and nurturing environment.
St. Andrew’s International Primary School invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Finance Manager on a fixed two-year contract, renewable subject to performance and availability of funds. The successful candidate will report directly to the Head Teacher.
Role Intent
To ensure effective financial management of the school through strong financial controls, accurate reporting, statutory compliance, and efficient use of resources to support high-quality education delivery.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and manage the school’s annual budget in collaboration with the Head Teacher
- Monitor income and expenditure to ensure financial sustainability
- Prepare monthly, termly, and annual financial reports for management and the Board
- Conduct financial forecasting and manage cash flow
- Maintain accurate financial records in line with international accounting standards and local regulations
- Oversee the general ledger, bank reconciliations, and financial statements
- Manage payroll, including salaries, benefits, statutory deductions, and pensions
- Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external auditors
- Oversee school fees billing, collection, and reconciliation
- Implement and monitor fee policies, discounts, and payment plans
- Ensure compliance with tax laws and statutory requirements
- Implement internal controls to minimize financial risk and fraud
- Supervise and support finance and accounts staff
- Provide financial advice to support strategic decision-making
- Serve as Secretary to the Finance Committee of the Board
- Prepare periodic reports for management and the Board
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
- Professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA, or CIMA
- Membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants Malawi
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial management, preferably within an international school or non-profit organization
- Experience working with multicultural teams is an added advantage
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong financial analysis and problem-solving skills
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
