Organisational Context

Stephanos Foundation is a Reformed Christian faith-based international non-governmental organisation (NGO) located in Chilangoma, Chileka, Blantyre, Malawi. Established in Malawi in 1994 through an initiative that originated in the Netherlands, the Foundation is committed to improving the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children through various care and development programmes. Stephanos Foundation is duly registered with the Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (CONGOMA), the NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA), and the Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM).

The Stephanos Foundation is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated individuals to fill the position of Financial Controller.

Position Title: Financial Controller

Reporting to: Executive Director

Position Level: Executive Member

Overall Purpose of the Position

The Financial Controller shall oversee the Foundation’s financial management systems, including maintenance of accounts, budgeting processes, and expenditure control. The incumbent shall supervise the Accounts Department and ensure timely financial transactions and payments. The role also includes coordinating departmental operations and ensuring the effective implementation of financial policies and procedures. In addition, the position contributes to strategic planning, budgeting, performance management, and organisational policy formulation and execution.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for, among others:

  • Ensure prudent financial management practices, compliance with organisational policies and procedures, and proper maintenance of financial and organisational records.
  • Coordinate budgeting processes, monitor budget performance, analyse variances between budgets and actual expenditures, and provide corrective financial advice to budget holders and Management.
  • Oversee financial operations, including matching income and expenditure, supervising journal postings, preparing annual financial reports, and providing cash flow forecasts.
  • Supervise and guide the Accounts Department, conduct regular and surprise stocktaking and cash counts, and monitor loans, advances, and related financial obligations.
  • Support organisational accountability and strategic operations by performing departmental coordination duties and any other responsibilities assigned by Management.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting;
  • Professional qualification such as CA Malawi, ACCA, CIMA;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting;
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant work experience;
  • Be a member of ICAM;
  • Knowledge of Sage Pastel accounting package;
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills;
  • High level of integrity and professionalism;
  • Team-player;
  • Sound knowledge and faithful adherence to Biblical Scripture and doctrine
