Position: Health, Safety & Environmental Officer

Contract Type: 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract
Location: Lilongwe
Department: Welding & Fabrication
Reporting To: Workshop & Sales Manager
The Role
The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Officer will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace in line with Malawian legislation and organizational policies. The role involves developing, implementing, and continuously improving HSE management systems to minimize risks and ensure compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Occupational Health and Safety
- Develop, implement, and monitor workplace HSE policies and procedures.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments.
- Identify hazards and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and prepare reports.
- Ensure compliance with occupational safety legislation.
- Monitor proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Coordinate safety committees and meetings.
- Maintain statutory HSE records and registers.
Environmental Management
- Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
- Monitor waste management and pollution control activities.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments and inspections.
- Promote sustainable environmental practices.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities.
Training and Awareness
- Conduct HSE inductions for staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Organize safety awareness campaigns and toolbox talks.
- Train employees on safety procedures and emergency response.
- Promote a strong HSE culture across the organization.
Emergency Preparedness
- Develop and maintain emergency response and evacuation plans.
- Coordinate fire safety drills and emergency preparedness activities.
- Ensure availability of emergency equipment.
- Support emergency response teams.
Compliance and Reporting
- Prepare HSE reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual).
- Monitor compliance with statutory and organizational requirements.
- Support inspections by regulatory authorities.
- Maintain records of incidents, audits, and corrective actions.
- Support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation where applicable.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Public Health, or a related field.
- Certificate holders with strong practical experience may be considered.
- Professional HSE certifications will be an added advantage.
- Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in HSE management.
- Strong knowledge of Malawian labour and environmental legislation.
- Good report writing and communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
