Background

St. Andrew’s International Primary School is an independent international school located in Blantyre, Malawi, offering the British National Curriculum. The school seeks to appoint a highly competent Human Resources & Administration Manager on a fixed two-year contract, renewable based on performance and availability of funds. The successful candidate will report to the Head Teacher and play a key role in strengthening the school’s people management and administrative systems.

Role Intent

To develop, implement, and manage HR strategies, policies, and administrative systems that support the school’s objectives, ensuring compliance, staff wellbeing, and effective operational support.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Human Resources

  • Develop and implement HR strategies and policies aligned with organizational objectives
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, onboarding, and staff retention
  • Manage performance appraisal systems and staff development programs
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, organizational policies, and ethical standards
  • Lead employee relations, including disciplinary and grievance processes
  • Develop and maintain HR policies, procedures, and manuals
  • Manage compensation, benefits, payroll coordination, and staff welfare
  • Promote a positive organizational culture and employee engagement
  • Identify training needs and coordinate capacity-building programs
  • Support leadership development and succession planning
  • Monitor and evaluate training effectiveness

Administration

  • Oversee general office administration and support services
  • Manage administrative staff, school assets, and facilities
  • Ensure proper records management and documentation systems
  • Coordinate logistics, fleet management, and office security
  • Manage contracts with service providers and suppliers
  • Prepare HR and administration budgets and reports
  • Advise senior management on HR and administrative matters
  • Participate in organizational planning and decision-making
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise HR and administrative staff

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or Public Administration
  • Membership with the Malawi Institute of People Management (IPMM)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Human Resource Management and Administration in the private sector
  • Experience working within education institutions and managing academic staff is an advantage

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • In-depth knowledge of labor laws and HR best practices
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in HR systems and Microsoft Office applications
  • Emotional stability, patience, and understanding when dealing with parents, students, staff, and the public
  • Dependability and a strong understanding of safeguarding issues in a school environment
