Partners in Hope (PIH) is a faith-based Malawian Non-Governmental organization that was established in 2005. PIH is incorporated under the provisions of Trustees Incorporation Act, 1962, in Malawi. PIH under Implementation Science Department is seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual for the below position;

The Implementation Science – Data Manager will oversee all data-related activities preformed within the Implementation Science Department of Partners in Hope (PIH). The Department implements all scientific activities for PIH, including the US department of state grants as well as non-USG funded research with diverse funders (i.e., US National Institutes of Health (NIH), The Gates Foundation, and others). We are looking for an extraordinary Implementation Science Data Manager who is passionate about developing and implementing data science solutions that drive impact for patients and strengthen data management and analytical capacity within Malawi. The incumbent will be based full time in Lilongwe, Malawi and oversee data management activities within studies conducted at PIH, under the direction of the Senior Implementation Science Manager at PIH.

The position will oversee Data Coordinators and Data Officers within the Implementation Science Department and provide mentorship and capacity building to the Malawi-based research team in data management and analytics.

Responsibilities or duties

  • Among others, the Implementation Science Data Manager will be required to perform the following tasks:
  • Oversee all Data Systems for PIH’s Implementation Science Department.
  • Oversee all data systems within the PIH Implementation Science Department to facilitate data collection, storage, cleaning and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain data management guidelines and SOPs for the department. Priority protocols are for data management, quality control and security, and monitoring.
  • Identify overall data-related needs for current and upcoming projects, in collaboration with larger study teams (i.e., Senior Implementation Science Manager, Principal Investigators, Coordinators).
  • Support the development of study proposals/concepts to ensure study design and data protocols are clear, adequate, and relevant.
  • Serve as a troubleshooter and provide guidance to study teams on data analysis and interpretation, as needed.
  • Manage Data Team – The role will oversee 2-4 Data Coordinators or Officers within PIH’s Implementation Science Department.
  • Oversee hiring of data field staff, as needed.
  • Manage data team’s time and project allocation across study activities.

Oversee Data Coordinators’ and provide support on their core activities, including:

  • Develop study specific data management, quality control, security and monitoring protocols;
  • Develop e-data collection tools that are (a) user friendly and meet study needs; and (b) are tested to ensure data consistency and accuracy;
  • Rigorous implementation of data protocols;
  • Implementing appropriate data download, storage and sharing procedures;
  • Develop data quality and monitoring reports (including STATA .do files);
  • Conduct preliminary analyses and complete results tables;

Facilitate in-service capacity development related to data management, data analysis, and quantitative writing.

Lead Data Analysis and Writing of Select Studies. The Data Manager will take a leading role in 1-2 priority studies, based on fit and need. Activities include:

  • Co-lead the development of study questionnaires, gathering secondary data and developing data collection and analysis plans.
  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses, create visualizations and reports, and present findings to PIH teams and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to manuscript development and writing, in some cases, being a lead author.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Masters in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, or other relevant fields plus at least 5 years experience in data management, including managing other data staff.

OR

  • PhD in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, or other relevant fields plus at least 2 years experience in data management.
  • Experience in health research. Experience managing data from clinical trials (including medical chart data) and implementation science studies preferred.
  • Strong skillsets in data analysis, statistical methods and data visualization.
  • Expertise in ODK and SurveyCTO.
  • Expertise in Stata, R and/or Python.
  • Initiative and ability to develop and support data management strategies and solve problems independently.
  • Outstanding management skills, attention to detail, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong writing in English and public presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills in MS Office.
  • Ability to travel within Malawi as needed.
  • Experience and passion for mentoring and developing the next generation of data scientists preferred.
