The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA), established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011, is Malawi’s Nuclear and Radiation regulatory body mandated to protect the public, workers and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

AERA aims to be an excellent regulatory authority in Nuclear and Radiation protection and is seeking a qualified, experienced and results-oriented individual to fill the position of Inspection and Enforcement Officer (Medical), tenable at its Lilongwe office.

Purpose of the Job:

To implement inspection and enforcement programmes in medical facilities.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Imaging (Radiography) or Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences from an accredited institution recognised by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
• Relevant professional registration or membership with a recognised professional body.
• At least 2 years’ working experience in radiation safety, inspection, regulatory compliance and enforcement.
• Applicants must be not more than 35 years old.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct scheduled and ad hoc inspections of medical facilities using radiation-generating equipment and sources to ensure compliance with national regulations and licence conditions.
• Monitor the safe use, storage, transport and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting equipment.
• Monitor compliance with the Act and Regulations, as well as licence and permit conditions issued by AERA.
• Compile inspection and other technical reports and recommend improvements where there is non-compliance.
• Ensure suitable remedial actions are implemented in cases of non-compliance.
• Identify potential radiation hazards and recommend practical safety measures to protect people, the environment and the public in medical facilities.
• Provide technical advice on radiation safety in medical applications, including diagnostics, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine.
• Recommend enforcement action where there has been serious violation of the Act and Regulations, as well as licence and permit conditions issued by AERA.
• Investigate incidents, accidents or suspected violations involving radiation sources in medical facilities.
• Support emergency preparedness and response activities related to radiation incidents.
• Maintain and update regulatory records and inspection data for medical facilities.
• Assist in drafting and interpreting regulatory regulations and standard operating procedures governing medical radiation safety.
