Job Purpose
Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board Audit Committee (BAC), the Internal Audit Manager will assist VisionFund Malawi (VFM) in accomplishing its strategic objectives by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal controls, and governance processes. The role is responsible for monitoring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and FM policies and procedures relating to financial, operationa, and social performance. The Internal Audit Manager will provide independent assurance and advisory services to the Board and Management regarding the adequacy and effectiveness of internal control systems and risk management practices.
Key Responsibilities
Planning
- Develop and submit for approval to the Board Audit Committee (BAC) an annual risk-based Internal Audit Plan outlining activities for the year.
- Prepare the internal Audit Department (IAD] budget in line with the approved annual plan and monitor performance against budget.
Reporting
- Submit timely audit reports to Management for all audits conducted.
- Submit written audit reports to the BAC prior to scheduled Board meetings.
- Provide high-quality dashboards and required reports to the Regional Audit Manager (RAM) in a timely manner.
- Track the implementation of corrective actions and report status updates to Management, RAM, and BAC
- Communicate changes in internal control and audit policies to relevant staff.
Audit Execution
- Execute the approved Internal Audit Plan with the support of Internal Auditors.
- Ensure audit testing complies with approved standards and audit programs.
- Prepare, review, and issue audit reports following technical review by the RAM, where applicable.
- Discuss audit findings with relevant departments and recommend practical improvements.
- Ensure audit documentation is properly maintained in compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
- Review and update audit programs anc the Audit Manual when necessary.
Fraud Investigations & External Engagement
- Investigate fraud incidents escalated through Management, RAM, BAC, or whistleblowing channels.
- Support external audits and regulatory examinations.
- Monitor implementation of recommendations from external auditors and regulatory reviews.
Supervision & Capacity Building
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Internal Audit staff.
- Support continuous professional development of the team.
- Ensure completion of required Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours annually.
Relationship Management
- Build strong working relationships with the CEO and Senior Management while maintaining independence
- Maintain professional relationships with the BAC, RAM, regulators, and external auditors.
Minimum Qualifications & Competencies
- University degree in Audit, Accountancy, or Finance
- Professional certification (CIA, ACCA, CIMA). CISA, CFE, CESA, or CSA will be an added advantage. Exceptional candidates with out full certification may be considered.
- Membership of the Institute of Internal Auditors (Malawi or Global).
- Minimum of five (5) years’ audit experience in banking supervision and/or microfinance, including at least two (2) years in a leadership role within an Internal Audit function.
- Experience advising senior management and reporting to Audit & Finance Committees on risk management matters.
Personal Attributes
- High integrity, honesty, and sound ethical judgment.
- Strong communication, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
- Proactive, organized, and results-oriented.
- Capability and willingness to take responsibility and lead by example.
- Committed Christian, willing to participate in and lead daily devotions.
- Deep commitment to serving vulnerable communities.
