Drop of Compassion (DOC) is a UK-based charity committed to creating sustainable change. Since 2013, DOC has been actively working in Malawi by partnering with local organizations to empower communities and improve lives through transformative projects. These initiatives include constructing health and maternity clinics in remote villages, developing irrigation systems, building and managing primary and secondary schools, providing emergency relief during natural disasters, and drilling boreholes.

Responsibilities or duties

The Irrigation Technician shall be responsible for supervising the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems to ensure optimal water distribution across landscapes and agricultural fields in rural areas. He/she will be capable of diagnosing system issues, performing routine inspections, and adjusting components to ensure efficient operation.

Qualifications or requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Irrigation Engineering
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong technical expertise with a keen eye for detail and troubleshooting abilities
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of pumps and generators
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Proficiency in designing, constructing, and installing irrigation systems of various sizes tailored to organizational needs.

Experience needed

The position offers a competitive salary package commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

  • Apply specialized technical knowledge in the design, construction, and maintenance of irrigation infrastructure, including canals, pipelines, drainage systems, and related facilities.
  • Develop detailed project plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure efficient and effective irrigation systems.
  • Provide guidance on water management strategies, conservation practices, and efficient usage to optimize resource utilization.
  • Monitor water distribution and usage, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all activities comply with safety protocols, environmental regulations, and industry standards.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the construction and installation of irrigation systems, ensuring projects are completed within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Identify and resolve technical challenges during project execution to prevent delays and ensure quality.
  • Conduct technical feasibility studies to assess the viability of proposed irrigation.
  • Supervise contractors and field personnel during construction activities.
  • Prepare detailed reports on project progress, technical assessments, and safety inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work performed, materials used, and compliance documentation.
