Portland Cement Malawi Limited invites applications from suitably qualified, highly motivated team players and result driven candidates for consideration to fill the position of Legal Manager.

Responsible To: The Head of Legal Department

Location: Head Office, Makata, Blantyre

Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

The Legal Manager will provide legal support and advisory services to the company ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, safeguarding company interests, and advising management on legal matters. The role serves as a key resource in mitigating risks, maintaining corporate governance standards, and supporting smooth business operations through sound legal guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to management and departments on corporate, labour, and commercial matters
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents (e.g., supplier contracts, service agreements, employment contracts).
  • Represent the company in legal proceedings and liaise with external counsel/solicitors on litigation, opinions, and outsourced matters.
  • Ensure compliance with Malawi labour laws, company policies and other statutory requirements
  • Formulate and implement policies to mitigate legal risks, particularly in areas of safety, labour relations, and supplier agreements.
  • Support HR and management in handling disciplinary cases, employment contracts, and expatriate staff compliance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislative changes and sensitize relevant departments and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and file regulatory and statutory returns (e.g., legal registers, compliance reports).
  • Manage and maintain organized legal documentation, records, and case files.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare briefs and reports to guide management

Qualifications and Experience

  • A qualified solicitor or barrister with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized University; admission to practice in Malawi
  • Minimum of 5 years ‘post -qualification experience in corporate or industrial law
  • Strong knowledge of Malawi labour laws, corporate governance and compliance frameworks
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial sector will be an added advantage.
