Purpose of the Role

To manage and develop the school library as a welcoming and well-organised learning resource that supports teaching, research, reading, academic achievement, and lifelong learning among students and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Library Management

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the school library.
  • Organise, classify, label, and maintain books and other library resources.
  • Maintain accurate records of library resources and users.
  • Manage borrowing and returning of books and other materials.
  • Monitor the condition of library resources and arrange repairs or replacement where necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, quiet, and welcoming library environment.

Student Support and Reading Development

  • Assist students in locating and using appropriate books and information resources.
  • Promote reading and independent learning.
  • Encourage students to develop research and information-literacy skills.
  • Support students in selecting books appropriate to their age and academic level.
  • Assist teachers and students with research and learning resources.

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Work with teachers to identify library resources required to support the curriculum.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining subject-specific collections.
  • Support research, projects, assignments, and academic activities.
  • Introduce students to responsible and effective use of information resources.

Library Records and Resources

  • Maintain an up-to-date catalogue and inventory of library resources.
  • Monitor the acquisition of new books and learning materials.
  • Prepare reports on library usage, resources, and needs.
  • Assist with library budgeting and procurement recommendations.

General Responsibilities

  • Organise reading activities, book clubs, literacy programmes, and other library-related activities.
  • Promote appropriate use and care of library resources.
  • Integrate ICT and digital information resources where available.
  • Support the school’s academic and extracurricular programmes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a school library is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of library classification, cataloguing, and information management.
  • Basic ICT and digital information management skills.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good knowledge of books, information resources, and research.
  • Ability to work well with students and teachers.
  • Good ICT skills.
