Background

The Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Programme (MLW) is a world-class health research institution committed to improving health through research, capacity building, and strong partnerships.

The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is seeking to hire an experienced data scientist to establish and lead a team of data scientists in the recently formed Data Science and Computational Modelling Unit (DSCMU).

The post is a collaboration between the DSCMU at MLW and the Civic Health Innovation Labs, University of Liverpool. The appointee will be a member of CHIL and the Department of Health Data Science at the University of Liverpool. Both CHIL and the Department of Health Data Science sit within the University’s Institute of Population Health. CHIL is an interdisciplinary research centre, with the University of Liverpool and a strategic partner for MLW.

The position is tenable at MLW head offices in Blantyre.

Responsibilities

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE)

The prospective post holder is expected to lead and deliver world leading research in health data science. This is in addition to being highly regarded in their discipline and able to:

  • Establish and lead a team of data scientists at MLW.
  • Provide strategic leadership in their specialty by having a strong track record of interdisciplinary, team-based science including publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrate a strong track record in obtaining external funding from a range of sources.
  • Identifying new strategic interdisciplinary research opportunities and broadening funding sources to ensure long term success.
  • Demonstrate strong ability to communicate research findings to key audiences, including decision makers, media and the public.
  • Strengthen and develop partnerships in this field across the region and beyond. Championing data science to MLW, national, regional and global collaborators.
  • Design and deliver teaching and training resources for staff and students.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field of health data science. As an academic member of staff, the post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching activities.

Those without a formal teaching qualification will be required to obtain one through the University.
