The Project Accountant is responsible for the production of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports as well as ensuring that transactions are posted on a timely basis, effective and efficient management of financial resources, and assisting staff with understanding of finance matters. He/she ensures reconciliations of control and balance sheet accounts are done; supervises, trains and reviews work done by subordinates but also reviewing the finance procedures ensuring that they are sound and operate effectively
Responsibilities or duties
- Monitoring advances, preparing journals and reconciliations, processing financial transactions, calculating employee benefits, and ensuring accurate financial coding and records.
- Managing payment processing, maintaining grant cash balances, reviewing financial transactions, preparing grant reports, monitoring outstanding advances, and ensuring proper filing and documentation.
- Supporting proposal and organizational budget development, forecasting, budget consolidation, resource allocation, capacity building of staff on budgeting, and monitoring spending against plans.
- Preparing monthly financial analyses, budget-versus-actual reports, variance analysis, and ensuring compliance with donor and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Monitoring grant performance and compliance, managing amendments and extensions, identifying financial risks, coordinating audits and closeouts, tracking donor payments, and providing financial training to non-finance staff.
- Assisting with internal and external audits, conducting field office monitoring visits, strengthening financial controls, and building staff capacity in financial management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy/Finance
- A professional qualification ACCA or CIMA is an added advantage.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent understanding of business and financial planning including modelling.
- Excellent analytical skills – the ability to analyse complex financial data and design and produce effective management information.
- Excellent understanding of financial systems and procedures.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to contribute to strategic decisions.
- Knowledge of financial system management.
- Excellent experience of computerized accounts packages, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience needed
5 years at Finance Officer level; or 3 years at Finance Officer level and 2 years at senior officer level in a busy organization.
