The Radiography Technician is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services, including ultrasound scanning, to support accurate diagnosis and clinical decision-making. The role requires strict adherence to patient safety, radiation protection principles, and professional standards of practice.
Employment Type: Fixed-Term Contract
Duration: Two (2) years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance review.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Department, the following are the key responsibilities of the Hospital Radiographer:
- Perform diagnostic radiography including X-ray and be able to carry out ultrasound scanning.
- Accurately record patient data, imaging details, and ultrasound procedures in hospital information systems.
- Independently conduct ultrasound examinations, ensuring accurate image acquisition and preliminary observations where required by protocol.
- Ensure correct patient identification, positioning, and preparation prior to all imaging procedures.
- Produce diagnostically acceptable images in line with established clinical protocols.
- Assist clinicians during specialised and interventional procedures.
- Clearly explain imaging and ultrasound procedures to patients and obtain informed cooperation.
- Apply radiation protection principles and non-ionising safety standards for ultrasound practice.
- Operate and perform routine quality assurance checks on imaging and ultrasound equipment.
- Identify and report equipment faults promptly in accordance with hospital policy.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention, control, and equipment safety standards.
- Ensure proper labelling, storage, and archiving of images.
- Maintain records in line with legal, ethical, and institutional requirements.
- Assist clinicians during specialised and interventional procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography.
- Formal training and demonstrated competence in ultrasound scanning.
- Registration with the Medical Council of Malawi.
- Valid practising licence.
- Willingness and ability to work shifts, weekends, and on-call duties.
- Willing to work under close supervision.
- At least 2–3 years’ experience in a hospital or diagnostic imaging setting.
- Those with sound knowledge in sonography will have an added advantage.
