INTRODUCTION TO GIRLS NOT BRIDES

Girls Not Brides is the only global organization uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. We are a network of over 1,400 civil society organizations in over 100 countries working in partnership to end child marriage.

Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men and are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives. Our vision challenges deeply embedded social norms that harm the lives of girls, women and their communities.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE

The Malawi Accelerator Programme is an ambitious initiative by Girls Not Brides to catalyze collective impact at the national level and accelerate progress to end child marriage. It aims to strengthen national movements and the ending Child Marriage ecosystem, drive policy and implementation progress, improve access to resources, and ensure accountability to girls. The MAP is one of Girls Not Brides’ first flagship programmes under our Accelerator Collective.

THE SENIOR ADVOCACY AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER (ABOUT YOU)

Girls Not Brides Malawi Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer’s role focuses on building national partnerships/Movements, driving policy change to end child marriage, supporting member-led advocacy, amplifying youth/girls voices, and influencing national processes (like National Budgeting processes etc ) by providing technical support, developing advocacy strategies and advocacy/Information Education and Communication {IEC} materials (e.g. creative briefs, Donor Briefing notes, evidence informed policy briefs, posters, leaflets etc), and managing stakeholder communications. This role requires strong communication and influencing skills, experience in human rights and understanding of the political environment.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Senior Advocacy Officer is accountable for leading advocacy and communication strategies for the Malawi Accelerator Programme. Under the supervision of the MAP Technical Lead, the Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer will:

  • Facilitate the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of End Child Marriage advocacy and communication strategies to achieve positive outcomes for girls and young women.
  • In collaboration with the GNB Malawi members, facilitate advocacy efforts for Prioritization of full Implementation of the National Strategy to End Child Marriage.
  • Lead Budget Advocacy efforts in collaboration with GNB Malawi and relevant stakeholders to unlock domestic Financing for ECM.
  • Lead the development of stakeholder engagement plan in collaboration with GNB Malawi with guidance from GNB Secretariat.
  • Engage with donors, government and Private sector to advocate for domestic financing to End Child Marriage.
  • Influence CSOs, Private Sector, government and stakeholders in the ECM Ecosystem to uphold commitments on child marriage.
  • Effectively deploy public channels and private relationships to mobilize public and private resources to End Child Marriage, including through GNB.
  • Facilitate use of traditional and digital media and key partnerships to build awareness of and support for ECM/Children’s rights and GNB’s vision, including priorities and programmes at the national as aligned to regional and global GNB strategies.
  • Amplify Girls Voices and empower them to effectively carry out advocacy activities as agents of change and champions.
  • Facilitate Effective Internal and external communications on MAP across GNB Malawi.
  • Respond to major communication risks and challenges, identifying lasting mitigation measures.

LANGUAGE

Fluency in English is essential for this role (Spoken and written). Knowledge of other local languages like Yao, Chichewa and Tumbuka is an asset

SALARY RANGE

Market competitive based on a detailed survey by the Birches Group of comparable national NGO salaries in selected location. Payments will be made in Malawi local currency.

CONTRACT

Two (2) year fixed term full-time contract. The successful candidate will work from the MAP Grantee’s office much of the time, with IT and communication equipment provided by Girls Not Brides. The successful candidate must be a Malawi national.

As a member of the MAP Team in Malawi, the staff member will work alongside other MAP staff to oversee all advocacy and communications deliverables of the MAP, facilitating business communications, creating a positive workplace environment, and ensure the wellbeing of other staff including prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.

SUMMARY OF THE CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy & Implementation:

  • Support the work of a consultant leading the development of the GNB Malawi Advocacy Strategy and Budget Advocacy strategies in collaboration with GNB Malawi Partnership and UNICEF aligning them to the global and regional ECM advocacy priorities -influencing government, donors and institutions commitments.
  • Raise the visibility of MAP in Malawi to solicit collective ecosystem action on ECM.
  • Support the work of a consultant engaged to map and engage with ECM advocates and Champions (traditional leaders, women, girl, boys and men) in advocacy.
  • Spearhead disseminations of the National Strategy to End Child Marriage in Malawi including on radio and social media.

Movement Building:

  • Strengthen national partnerships, coalitions, and networks capacities, fostering collective action and leadership including empowerment of girls.
  • Provide support to Movement Building and Advocacy Leadership Programme (MBALP) Trainings for GNB Malawi/CSOs/relevant Stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with the Technical Lead, follow up all commitments made by government, private sector and other Partners on ECM

Technical Support:

  • Spearhead GNB Malawi advocacy capacity building on budget advocacy.
  • Provide expert advice on effective influencing advocacy strategies, evidence-based advocacy leveraging glob al/regional processes.
  • Provide technical support to girl and youth –led ECM advocacy activities
  • Map media outlets/houses/radios in rural areas of Malawi and train selected media teams to effectively raise awareness and carry out ECM advocacy activities under MAP.
  • Build the capacity of and provide technical support to GNB Malawi on Budget advocacy.
  • Facilitate commemoration of relevant International and National Days ensuring ECM visibility and high-level advocacy in collaboration with GNB Malawi.
  • Provide technical expertise to GNB Malawi and stakeholders on the development and production/reproduction of ECM advocacy and IEC Materials.
  • Spearhead High Level MAP advocacy activities/events in collaboration with GNB Malawi.
  • Capacitate girl/youth ECM champions and facilitate logistical support to enable them effectively carry our advocacy activities at all levels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, web, etc. – to ensure we can build public awareness of and support to ECM.
  • Contribute to resource mobilization efforts especially for undertaking MAP advocacy and communication ensuring effective and transparent management of budget and resources.

Evidence & Learning:

  • Integrate evidence /lessons into ECM advocacy agenda in Malawi.
  • Promote use of data by GNB Malawi and stakeholders for ECM advocacy, budget advocacy and influencing policy.
