Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions tenable at Mulanje Mission Hospital:

The Senior Assistant Accountant supports the finance function by ensuring accurate financial records, timely processing of transactions, and compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and institutional policies. The role contributes to effective financial management and accountability within the organisation.

Responsibilities or duties

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date accounting records, including general ledger entries.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and prepayments under supervision.
  • Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations, cashbook management, and petty cash controls.
  • Process supplier invoices, verify supporting documentation, and prepare payment schedules.
  • Assist in managing accounts receivable, invoicing, and follow-up on outstanding balances.
  • Ensure timely and accurate posting of receipts and payments.
  • Support budget preparation, monitoring, and variance analysis.
  • Assist in tracking departmental expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and approval limits.
  • Maintain proper filing and documentation of financial records for audit purposes.
  • Assist during internal and external audits by preparing schedules and responding to queries.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and statutory requirements.
  • Support timely submission of statutory returns (e.g., PAYE, pension, social security) in line with legal requirements.
  • Support improvements in financial processes and controls.
  • Perform any other finance-related duties as assigned by the Accountant or Finance Manager.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Part qualification or progress toward a professional accounting certification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CA) is an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial procedures.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.

Experience needed

At least 1–3 years’ experience in a similar accounting or finance role.

Experience working in a hospital, NGO, or public sector environment.

Familiarity with statutory compliance and audit processes.

Employment Type: Fixed-Term Contract

Duration: Two (2) years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance review.
