SME Clinic, on behalf of its client, a leading workwear business in Malawi, is recruiting skilled and experienced Tailors. The successful candidates will produce high-quality uniforms, protective clothing and other workwear in accordance with approved designs, measurements and production standards.
This position requires excellent practical tailoring skills, attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently while meeting production targets and delivery deadlines. The successful candidates will be based in Blantyre.
Key Responsibilities
- Garment production. Sew and assemble workwear garments, including overalls, work suits, shirts, trousers, jackets, uniforms and protective clothing, according to approved designs and specifications.
- Measurements and fittings. Take accurate customer measurements, conduct fittings and make the necessary adjustments to ensure garments fit correctly.
- Pattern preparation and fabric cutting. Interpret patterns and garment specifications, mark fabrics accurately and cut materials while minimising wastage.
- Machine operation. Operate and maintain industrial sewing machines, overlock machines and other tailoring equipment safely and effectively.
- Quality control. Inspect completed garments for stitching quality, correct measurements, finishing and conformity with customer specifications.
- Alterations and repairs. Adjust, repair or modify garments as required while maintaining the expected quality and appearance.
- Materials management. Use fabrics, threads, buttons, zips and other production materials responsibly and report shortages or defects promptly.
- Production targets. Complete assigned work within agreed timelines and support the business in meeting customer orders and delivery schedules.
- Workplace safety. Maintain a clean and organised work area and follow all workplace health and safety procedures.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Education. MSCE, and a certificate or qualification in Tailoring, Fashion Design, Garment Making or a related field preferred.
- Experience. At least two years of proven experience in commercial tailoring or garment production. Experience producing uniforms, protective clothing or other workwear will be an added advantage.
- Technical skills.
- Ability to take accurate body measurements and conduct fittings.
- Strong fabric-cutting, stitching and garment-finishing skills.
- Ability to read and work from patterns, samples and garment specifications.
- Competence in operating sewing machines.
- Knowledge of different fabrics, threads, fasteners and garment-construction techniques.
- Ability to identify and correct defects in completed garments.
- Personal attributes.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliability, integrity and a positive attitude.
- Willingness to learn new garment-production techniques.
- Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision.
