Job Overview
The Tunneler will be responsible for excavating underground tunnels for mining and construction projects, ensuring safe and efficient operations in line with safety and environmental regulations.
The Role
- Excavation of underground tunnels and passages
- Operation of mining and drilling equipment
- Installation of tunnel support structures
- Ensuring underground safety and structural stability
Key Responsibilities
- Drill, blast, and excavate rock or soil for tunnel creation
- Operate mining equipment such as jackhammers, drills, loaders, and haulage machines
- Install tunnel supports (timber, steel, or concrete) to prevent collapse
- Remove debris and transport materials from underground work areas
- Inspect tunnels for hazards such as loose rocks, gas, or water leakage
- Follow occupational health and safety procedures at all times
- Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and other miners
- Maintain tools and machinery in good working condition
- Assist in ventilation setup to ensure safe underground air quality
- Perform any other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
- MSCE or equivalent
- Certificate or training in mining, construction, or engineering
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining, quarry, or underground work (preferred)
- Basic knowledge of mining methods and equipment
- Understanding of mining safety regulations in Malawi
- Physical fitness and ability to work in confined spaces
- Willingness to work shifts and in remote locations
