Job Overview

The Underwriting Manager will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to the underwriting function, ensuring profitable growth, effective risk management, and compliance with regulatory and corporate governance standards.

The Role

The successful candidate will lead underwriting operations across all general insurance classes while driving portfolio performance and mentoring underwriting teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and review underwriting policies, guidelines, and risk appetite in line with company objectives
  • Ensure accurate risk assessment, pricing, and acceptance of general insurance business
  • Monitor portfolio performance, including profitability, loss ratios, and growth across all classes of business
  • Lead, mentor, and manage underwriting staff to ensure high performance and compliance with best practices
  • Collaborate with Claims, Reinsurance, Finance, and Business teams to optimise underwriting outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal controls, and corporate governance standards
  • Prepare underwriting reports and provide executive management with insights to support decision-making

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Professional insurance qualification (ACII, FCII, or equivalent) is an added advantage
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in general insurance underwriting
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a managerial or supervisory role
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles across major general insurance classes
  • Proven leadership, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail

  • Risk assessment and portfolio management expertise
  • People management, mentoring, and coaching skills
  • Regulatory and compliance awareness
