Job Summary

The Biomedical Engineer will be responsible for supporting the NEST-IT initiative, ensuring the optimal performance, maintenance, and sustainability of maternal and neonatal medical equipment in healthcare facilities supported by NES360/ Beginnings Funds. This role bridges technical expertise, training, and stakeholder coordination to enhance maternal and newborn care standards in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), hospitals, and equipment distributors.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Must have a BSc in Biomedical Engineering or related field (Electrical/Mechanical Engineering with medical equipment experience).
  • Minimum 4 years in biomedical equipment maintenance, preferably in maternal/newborn care devices.
  • Must have experience working with MOH, hospitals, or NGOs in equipment management.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating medical devices.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel for data tracking, PowerPoint for training).
  • Knowledge of equipment inventory management systems.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.

Work Environment

Collaboration with diverse stakeholders (hospitals, MoH Officials, distributors, training institutions)

  • Serve as the primary liaison between healthcare facilities, equipment distributors, and MOH for equipment installation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Track, monitor, and document equipment status, including maintenance history and performance data.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with neonatal, maternal, and operating theatre devices.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of equipment performance and recommend upgrades or replacements.
  • Collaborate with Neonatal, QI, Biomed, and Clinical teams to review equipment functionality indicators and improve care standards.
  • Advise the QI Lead on evidence-based biomed interventions and program design.
  • Monitor biomed data to identify bottlenecks and implement solutions.
  • Support the Country Director in strategic planning for long-term medical device usage sustainability.
  • Assess biomedical training needs in partner facilities and develop tailored programs.
  • Create and update user manuals, training materials, and preventive maintenance protocols.
  • Assist MOH and educational institutions in pre-service curriculum development for biomedical engineering.
  • Coordinate healthcare staff training on equipment use, safety, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Conduct weekly check-ins to ensure compliance with NEST objectives.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clinicians, technicians, and equipment suppliers and distributors.
  • Compile reports on equipment inventory, event logs, and repair status.
  • Provide operational guidance to project managers as needed.
