The company seeks a qualified Electrical Technician with strong knowledge of petroleum pump systems, tank monitoring systems, and fuel station electrical installations.

Position Purpose

The Electrical Technician – Petroleum is responsible for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems associated with fuel pumps, dispensers, storage tanks, control panels, and related petroleum infrastructure. The role ensures operational reliability, electrical safety compliance, and quality workmanship across all petroleum installations and maintenance projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Installation & Commissioning

  • Install and wire fuel dispensers, pump motors, control panels, and associated electrical systems.
  • Conduct electrical connections for underground and above-ground tank systems.
  • Install and configure tank gauging systems, sensors, and monitoring equipment.
  • Perform electrical testing and commissioning of pumps and dispensing systems.
  • Ensure compliance with approved drawings, schematics, and electrical codes.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults in fuel pumps, motors, control panels, and monitoring systems.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on electrical components of petroleum infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to power supply, wiring faults, circuit breakers, relays, and automation systems.
  • Inspect earthing and bonding systems to ensure electrical safety compliance.
  • Support calibration and optimization of pump performance and tank monitoring systems.

Tank & Pump Electrical Systems

  • Test and verify pump motor performance and electrical load requirements.
  • Support leak detection systems and electronic monitoring interfaces.
  • Assist in integrating pumps and tank systems with payment and POS systems where applicable.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure all installations and repairs comply with electrical standards and petroleum safety regulations.
  • Conduct electrical safety checks before commissioning systems.
  • Verify proper cable routing, insulation, and panel organization.
  • Maintain detailed service and maintenance documentation.

Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental standards in petroleum environments.
  • Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance.
  • Use appropriate PPE and intrinsically safe tools in hazardous areas.
  • Identify and report electrical hazards, fuel leaks, or unsafe conditions immediately.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Record electrical test results, maintenance logs, and repair reports.
  • Document spares and components used per job.
  • Raise and obtain approval for spares requisitions before withdrawal from stores.
  • Provide daily progress reports to supervisors.

Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • MSCE (Malawi School Certificate of Education)
  • Grade 1 Trade Test Certificate in Electrical Installation, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • OR
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

Experience

  • Minimum 5–10 years’ experience in electrical installation and maintenance.
  • Proven experience working on fuel pumps, tank systems, and fuel station electrical infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with pump motors, control panels, sensors, and monitoring systems.
  • Experience in hazardous area electrical work is an added advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of pump motor systems and control circuits.
  • Knowledge of tank gauging systems and electronic monitoring systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of earthing, bonding, and explosion-proof installations.
  • Strong fault-diagnosis and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and respond to breakdowns promptly.
