Background

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA), established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011, is Malawi’s Nuclear and Radiation regulatory body mandated to protect the public, workers, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. AERA aims to be an excellent regulatory authority in Nuclear and Radiation protection and is seeking qualified, experienced, and results-oriented individuals to fill the following positions tenable at its Lilongwe office.

Purpose of the Job

To implement inspection and enforcement program in industrial facilities.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conducting planned and adhoc inspections;
  • Conduct inspections of industrial facilities using radiation sources to ensure compliance with national regulations and licence conditions.
  • Monitor the safe use, storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting equipment.
  • Monitoring compliance with the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;
  • Compiling inspection and other technical reports and recommending improvements where there is non-compliance;
  • Ensuring that suitable remedial actions are implemented in the event of non-compliance;
  • Recommending enforcement action to be taken where there has been serious violation of the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, or suspected violations involving radiation sources in industry.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response activities related to radiation incidents.
  • Provide technical advice on radiation safety in industrial applications such as mining, construction, manufacturing, and non-destructive testing.
  • Implementing section work plans and
  • Preparing periodic reports.

Minimum required qualifications and work experience

  • Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Nuclear Science, Physics, or Industrial Laboratory Technology obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). and
  • One (1) year proven experience in radiation safety and security.
