JOB PURPOSE

The Piping Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, coordinating, supervising, and inspecting piping installation works on construction, industrial, water supply, wastewater, mining, energy, and infrastructure projects. The role ensures piping systems are installed in accordance with engineering drawings, project specifications, applicable standards, quality requirements, and health, safety, and environmental regulations while meeting project schedules and budgets.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Engineering and Design

  • Review piping designs, drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Prepare piping layouts, isometric drawings, material take-offs, and installation plans where required.
  • Verify piping routes, elevations, and support requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
  • Participate in design reviews and constructability assessments

2. Construction Supervision

  • Supervise piping installation activities on site.
  • Coordinate fabrication, erection, installation, and testing of piping systems.
  • Ensure piping work is completed according to approved drawings and project schedules.
  • Monitor contractor and subcontractor performance.
  • Resolve technical issues arising during construction.

3. Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)

  • Ensure compliance with approved Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Verify pipe materials, fittings, valves, and accessories before installation.
  • Inspect pipe alignment, welding, flange connections, supports, and fittings.
  • Witness hydrostatic, pneumatic, pressure, and leak tests.
  • Ensure non-conforming work is corrected promptly.
  • Maintain quality inspection records.

4. Material Management

  • Review material requisitions and procurement specifications.
  • Verify delivered piping materials against project requirements.
  • Monitor material usage to minimise waste.
  • Coordinate storage and preservation of piping materials.

5. Project Planning

  • Prepare work schedules for piping activities.
  • Monitor progress against project programmes.
  • Identify construction risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coordinate manpower, equipment, and material requirements.

6. Testing and Commissioning

  • Coordinate pressure testing and flushing activities.
  • Verify installation prior to commissioning.
  • Assist during commissioning and system start-up.
  • Prepare punch lists and ensure close-out of outstanding items.
  • Participate in project handover activities.

7. Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
  • Maintain inspection records and testing documentation.
  • Prepare as-built documentation.
  • Maintain material tracking records.
  • Keep accurate site diaries and technical records.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Piping Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in piping engineering or mechanical construction.

Added Advantages

  • Registration with the Malawi Board of Engineers or eligibility for registration.
  • Membership of a recognised engineering professional body.
  • Valid Malawi Driving Licence.
  • Experience on water supply, wastewater, industrial plants, mining, power, oil and gas, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supervising piping installation contractors.
