Background
Zomba Diocese Health Commission operates under the Social Directorate of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba. Its mission is to advance the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by promoting human life and providing preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services in a holistic manner. This is achieved through participation in collaborative networks and partnerships, aligned with the needs and capacities of the communities, and in accordance with Catholic core values and principles, to ensure the delivery of the high- quality services, the Commission is seeking to recruit motivated and experienced individuals for the following vacant positions at one of its health facilities St. Robert Health Centre (Sitima).
Job Summary
The Senior Nursing Sister will largely be responsible for planning and implementing quality-nursing activities in the ward. Further, he/she will be responsible for providing general nursing and midwifery care to patients and their families that is appropriate, effective and efficient in respectful and caring manner regardless of personal characteristics.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Planning and implementing comprehensive quality nursing care using the nursing and midwifery process.
- Performing and meeting the daily living activities of patients.
- Collaborating with other health care providers in meeting specific needs of patients.
- Facilitating adherence to standard precautions of infection prevention and control practices consequently, promoting safe work environment.
- Building and promoting therapeutic relationship with patients, guardians and fellow health care providers.
- Ensuring accurate documentation and maintenance of records of all nursing care activities performed.
- Maintaining professional code of conduct at all times.
- Developing and implementing ward policies in consultation with other multidisciplinary team members.
- Critically analyzing whether all health workers comply with quality standards of care.
- Planning and conducting regular meetings with different cadres of staff in the ward.
- Monitoring staff performance, conducting appraisal annually, and making recommendations accordingly.
- Supervision of nurse/midwife technicians and hospital attendants.
- Monitoring members of staff attendance in the ward or department, record and report absents accordingly.
- Ensuring that the ward has required resources to ensure quality nursing care.
- Compiling weekly and monthly duty roster for the ward.
- Conducting inventory quarterly and maintaining records.
- Providing measures for ensuring drugs safety and record keeping.
- Providing supportive supervision to all nursing/midwifery activities in the health facility.
- Participating in identification of departmental training needs and conducting on the job training.
- Adhering to continuous professional development.
- Using evidence based approaches to improve nursing/nursing care.
- Any other duties deemed reasonable, assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery
- Registered with Nurses Council of Malawi
- A minimum of four years’ work experience
Knowledge, Ability and Skills
- Well conversant with the Health system in Malawi,
- Ability to lead a team,
- Problem identification and solving skills,
- Effective communication skills
- High standards of dressing and presentable.
- Time management skills
- Empathetic and friendly.
