JOB VACANCY: ASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT
The Nkhoma Water and Environment Department is urgently seeking a qualified candidates to fill the position of Assistant Accountant.
Location : Nkhoma
Reports to : Water and Environment Manager
Purpose of the job
The Assistant Accountant will provide key financial support in managing the fund’s accounting operations. This role involves maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, assisting with audits and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Performing bank reconciliations, control account reconciliations, and other reconciling tasks as needed.
- Verifying payables’ transactions, payables’ reconciliations and payments
- Payroll processing and pay slips for staff
- Validating and reviewing of customer payments and related customer invoice verification
- Maintain proper filing and documentation of financial records, including invoices, receipts and tax documents
- Managing accounts and related transaction verification, validation and internal control checks
- Effecting data entry into the accounting system (Quick Books) and ensuring the accuracy of the data
- Preparation of VAT, Withholding Tax that may be applicable to financial transactions are neatly recorded and reflected in the disbursements due to vendors i.e. MRA in order to comply with laws and regulations
- Assist during internal and external audits by providing required documentation
- Ensure payments are made within the agreed-upon timelines and maintain good relationships with suppliers
- Reconciling the accounts payable and accounts receivables
- Ensure timely liquidation of payments
- Working hand in hand with the procurement officer to ensure all payments are timely made.
- Preparation of reports to support the management accounts and financial statements i.e. collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information and trends.
- Preparation of the financial reports to the Board
- Perform any such duties as may be assigned by General Treasurer/ Accountant from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelors of Accountancy from a recognized institution.
- Must be a registered member of Malawi Accountants Board and Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)
- At least 3 years’ experience in a busy and challenging accounting environment
- High integrity and ethical conduct.
- Ability to work under minimum supervision
- Team player
- Proficiency in accounting software, particularly QuickBooks is a MUST.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Committed and practicing christian, aligned with the values of CCAP Nkhoma Synod church
