Job Purpose
The Assistant Earthworks Foreman assists the Earthworks Foreman in planning, supervising, and coordinating earthworks operations on construction projects. The role ensures that excavation, filling, grading, compaction, and related earthworks activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and environmental requirements. The Assistant Earthworks Foreman also assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Earthworks Foreman.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Site Supervision
- Assist in supervising daily earthworks operations.
- Allocate work to equipment operators and labourers under the direction of the Earthworks Foreman.
- Monitor progress against daily work plans.
- Ensure work is carried out according to approved drawings, specifications, and method statements.
- Supervise work during shifts or when delegated by the Earthworks Foreman.
Earthworks Operations
Assist in supervising:
- Site clearing and grubbing.
- Topsoil stripping.
- Bulk excavation.
- Cut and fill operations.
- Embankment construction.
- Trench excavation.
- Road formation.
- Drainage earthworks.
- Backfilling.
- Layer placement.
- Moisture conditioning
Equipment Coordination
- Coordinate the movement and efficient use of construction equipment.
- Ensure operators understand daily work assignments.
- Monitor equipment utilisation and report breakdowns promptly.
- Liaise with the workshop regarding equipment servicing and repairs.
Quality Control
- Ensure earthworks are carried out in accordance with project specifications.
- Verify correct levels, alignment, gradients, and dimensions.
- Monitor compaction activities and assist laboratory technicians during field testing.
- Report defects and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Prevent unnecessary rework through close supervision.
Planning and Reporting
- Assist in preparing daily work schedules.
- Maintain daily records of:
- Labour attendance.
- Equipment utilisation.
- Production outputs.
- Materials used.
- Work completed.
- Submit progress reports to the Earthworks Foreman.
Qualifications & Experience
- Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
- National Certificate or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction, or a related field is an added advantage.
- Valid Malawi driving licence is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in earthworks, road construction, or civil engineering projects.
- Experience supervising construction labour and plant operations is an added advantage.
- Experience with road, bridge, drainage, airport, or other infrastructure projects is desirable.
