Program and Position Overview
In Malawi, CHAI supports the Ministry of Health (MoH) across multiple health areas, including Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, and Newborn Health (SRMNH). CHAI’s SRMNH program aims to reduce unintended pregnancies and related impact of maternal mortality, neonatal mortality and morbidity by increasing access to essential reproductive health products and services. The program works in partnership with government stakeholders to strengthen health systems, enhance policy and strategy development, and build the MoH’s capacity to deliver integrated, equitable, and sustainable SRMNH programs, including those targeting adolescent girls and young women.
Despite progress on some SRMNH outcomes, Malawi continues to face significant challenges in improving maternal and newborn outcomes. Maternal mortality remains high at 381 deaths per 100,000 live births, neonatal mortality at 19 deaths per 1,000 live births and still births at 35 per 1,000 live births. Contributing factors include limited access to quality obstetric and newborn care, delays in seeking care, and gaps in health workforce capacity and infrastructure.
Malawi has made notable progress in family planning, achieving a modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) of 48.6% among all women. However, unmet need for family planning remains high, particularly among adolescents and underserved populations. Ensuring consistent availability of a broad method mix, including long-acting and self-care options, remains a national priority.
To address these challenges, CHAI works in close collaboration with the Reproductive Health Directorate (RHD) of the MoH to strengthen the health system’s capacity to deliver high-quality, equitable, and sustainable SRMNH services. This includes support in areas such as policy and strategy development, health workforce strengthening, commodity security, service delivery, and data systems to drive evidence-based decision-making and improve health outcomes for women and newborns.
CHAI Malawi therefore seeks a self-motivated results driven individual to support the implementation of this program in close collaboration with MOH. The Program Analyst will be based in Lilongwe, Malawi with up to 50% travel in-country, and will report to the Program Manager, SRMNH.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Support review of national service delivery guidelines, training materials and reference manuals to integrate new MNH products.
- Conduct facility readiness assessments for introduction of new maternal and neonatal health commodities.
- Support/coordinate provider trainings and mentorships as required by closely working with MOH and district coordinators.
- Work with MOH to coordinate partners to ensure adherence to and implementation of the introduction and scale up plans.
- Support Quality improvement initiatives for maternal and neonatal health, working closely with MoH district coordinators.
- Strengthening Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) in selected focus districts, working closely with MoH and district coordinators.
- Support development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation, and learning plan for MNH new product introduction, including conducting routine field supervision visits, data collection, and routine data analysis of national and program data.
- Develop and implement strategies to strengthen MNH data management and supply chain systems at national, district, and facility levels.
- Creatively analyse and visualize data and develop presentations, progress reports, and other knowledge products to share successes and challenges met during product introduction and scale up.
- Document and share early lessons from new MNH product roll out.
- Identify strategic areas for expansion and support proposal development needed for future program development.
- Support the Program Manager in the development of work plans, reports, other key program deliverables and ad-hoc requirements, as needed.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as Nursing and Midwifery, Public, health, Social Sciences with experience in SRMNH.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a demanding, results-oriented environment in the public and/or private sector.
- Experience in sexual reproductive maternal and newborn health program implementation.
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and tactfully to a variety of audiences.
- Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required, including experience using Excel for quantitative analyses or costing.
- Great ability to communicate effectively using PowerPoint and Word.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills, and ability to use data to inform program development and strategy and to present results in both narrative and graphic form.
- Proven ability to operate independently, multitask, and set and achieve ambitious targets with limited guidance.
