Auto Electrician – Heavy Vehicles

Job Purpose

To diagnose, repair and maintain electrical and electronic systems in heavy vehicles, including wiring looms, ECUs, sensors, starting and charging systems and other vehicle electronics.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose electrical and electronic faults in trucks and heavy vehicles.
  • Inspect and repair electrical wiring looms and harnesses.
  • Troubleshoot ECU-related faults.
  • Diagnose sensor faults and communication problems.
  • Inspect and repair starting and charging systems.
  • Test batteries, alternators, starters and electrical circuits.
  • Diagnose lighting and auxiliary electrical systems.
  • Use diagnostic scanners and electrical testing equipment.
  • Repair damaged wiring, connectors and terminals.
  • Install and replace electrical and electronic components.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.
  • Conduct electrical inspections during routine vehicle servicing.
  • Verify repairs through testing and diagnostic procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of electrical repairs.
  • Work closely with mechanics and hydraulic technicians when faults overlap.
  • Maintain electrical tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow electrical safety procedures and manufacturer specifications.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate or Diploma in Auto Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience working on heavy commercial vehicles.
  • Strong experience with wiring looms, ECUs, sensors and vehicle diagnostic systems.
  • Experience using automotive diagnostic scanners is highly desirable.

Key Competencies

  • Strong electrical diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of modern vehicle electronics.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Safe and systematic approach to electrical repairs.
