The Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health. CMST is mandated to procure, store and distribute essential medicines and medical supplies to all public health facilities in Malawi. CMST is seeking to recruit non-malawi and malawi nationals to support its mandate to support its establishments in Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre as follows:

Branch Accountant

Job Grade: MS4
Location: Blantyre
Responsible to: Branch Manager (MS3)
Responsible for: Assistant Accountant (MS5)
No. of Positions: 1

Purpose of the Job

To provide oversight of accounting activities at branch level and support effective financial and inventory management operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure availability and proper utilisation of warehouse accounting documents, including stock cards.
  • Prepare warehouse accounting reports for the Branch Manager.
  • Plan and coordinate training programmes for branch accounts staff.
  • Support inventory management in accordance with established stock-management principles.
  • Prepare branch financial statements in accordance with accounting and statutory requirements.
  • Support cash-flow planning and management.
  • Assist in budget preparation and budgetary control.
  • Ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Supervise branch accounts staff.
  • Maintain stock records and monitor warehouse activities.
  • Coordinate stock reviews and identify obsolete and surplus inventory.
  • Facilitate stock-taking and inventory-verification exercises.
  • Advise relevant departments on slow- and fast-moving products.
  • Support compliance with pharmaceutical storage requirements and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accountancy from a recognised institution.
  • Professional qualification such as ACCA, CMA or CPA.
  • MSCE or equivalent.

Experience & Skills

  • At least 5 years' progressive experience in a busy accounting environment.
  • Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM) is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Strong professional judgement and teamwork.
