Introduction
The Business Development Officer will be responsible for driving revenue growth through acquisition of new insurance business, expansion of existing client portfolios, and effective market positioning of the brokerage’s insurance solutions. The role focuses on identifying and converting new business opportunities, maintaining strong client and insurer relationships, and achieving set revenue and growth targets in line with the firm’s strategic objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Generate new insurance business and grow brokerage revenue through effective business development and sales activities.
- Analyse the existing client base and insurance portfolios to identify cross-selling and up-selling opportunities.
- Market and present insurance products and risk solutions to prospective and existing clients across various segments.
- Liaise and collaborate with insurers, including underwriting and claims teams, to ensure competitive placement of risks and efficient service delivery.
- Communicate new insurance products, policy enhancements, and market developments to clients.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and business development pipelines.
- Provide management with timely market intelligence on client needs, competitor activity, pricing trends, and product performance.
- Represent the brokerage at client meetings, industry events, and business forums.
- Perform any other duties as assigned from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in sales, marketing, or customer service, preferably within insurance or financial services.
- Knowledge of the insurance industry and regulatory environment in Malawi is an added advantage.
- Fluency in English and Chichewa.

- Sound understanding of insurance products, brokerage operations, and service delivery processes.
- Strong sales, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking abilities.
- Ability to influence and persuade clients and stakeholders effectively.
- Willingness and ability to travel to meet clients, insurers, and other stakeholders as required.
Mandate
- Develop and implement a business development plan aligned with the brokerage’s strategic objectives.
- Build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients, insurers, and other key stakeholders.
- Proactively identify market opportunities and develop a sustainable pipeline of prospective clients.
- Participate in industry-related events, conferences, and networking platforms to promote the brokerage.
- Prepare and deliver client presentations and insurance proposals to support conversion of new business.
- Partner with clients to design tailored insurance and risk management solutions that meet their specific needs.
Performance Metrics
- Achievement of monthly and quarterly revenue and new business targets.
- Growth and retention of the client portfolio through effective relationship management.
- Consistent generation and conversion of quality leads into active insurance business.
- Timely and accurate reporting on market trends, client feedback, and competitor activity.
- Effective implementation of an individual business development plan aligned with company goals.
