Credit Manager Payroll Loans

Job Purpose

To lead and manage the payroll lending portfolio by ensuring high-quality credit underwriting, maintaining portfolio quality, strengthening operational controls, and enhancing customer experience while ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Credit & Risk Management

  • Ensure payroll loans are processed in line with approved credit policies and affordability standards.
  • Monitor portfolio quality indicators including arrears, PAR, restructures, and write-offs.
  • Ensure proper employer risk assessment and employee eligibility verification.
  • Review and recommend improvements to underwriting standards and scorecards.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal credit requirements.

2. Operations & Process Management

  • Oversee the end-to-end payroll loan process from origination to recovery.
  • Ensure timely processing and disbursement of loans within agreed turnaround times.
  • Strengthen operational controls to minimize fraud, duplicate lending, and process leakages.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of loan documentation and records.
  • Drive automation and process improvement initiatives.

3. Reconciliation & Repayment Oversight

  • Supervise reconciliation of employer remittances against expected deductions.
  • Ensure timely identification and resolution of repayment discrepancies and unpaid funds.
  • Monitor deduction efficiency and employer remittance performance.
  • Escalate unresolved reconciliation issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure accurate posting of repayments into the loan management system.

4. Reporting & Performance Monitoring

Prepare monthly portfolio performance reports for management.

Track key performance indicators including:

  • PAR
  • Collection rates
  • Productivity metrics

Present portfolio trends, risks, and recommendations to management committees.

5. Leadership & Team Management

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and supervision to the payroll loans team.
  • Set performance objectives and monitor staff productivity.
  • Build a high-performance and customer-focused culture.
  • Ensure staff adherence to policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Identify training and capacity-building needs for the team.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills / Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Banking, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Professional qualification in Credit Management, Risk Management, or Banking is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in lending, microfinance, payroll lending, or retail credit operations.
  • 5 years’ experience in management or Senior Officer level.
  • Strong understanding of payroll lending and credit risk management.
  • Knowledge of loan monitoring and reconciliation processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Leadership and people management ability.
  • Good negotiation and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in loan management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
