1. Introduction
Catholic Relief Services seeks a consultant to strengthen data and documentation systems for the Restore Africa project in Malawi. With over 120,000 farmers and 8.9 million trees recorded, the project must meet Gold Standard compliance for carbon finance audits.
2. Background
The Restore Africa project in Malawi, implemented by CRS in partnership with the Global Evergreening Alliance (GEA), is a large-scale land restoration initiative funded through carbon finance. It involves over 121,000 farmers, nearly 80,000 signed carbon agreements, and more than 8.9 million recorded trees. Due to Gold Standard compliance requirements, the project is highly data-intensive. However, current documentation systems at implementing partner (IP) and community levels are inadequate, posing risks to data integrity, audit readiness, and carbon credit validation.
2. Purpose
To enhance data and documentation management systems of IPs to ensure full compliance with Gold Standard requirements. This includes reviewing current systems, identifying gaps, developing practical recommendations, and supporting implementation of critical improvements.
3. Methodology
- Desk review of project documents, Gold Standard requirements, and assessment reports
- Field visits to IP offices and farmer groups
- Stakeholder interviews with M&E and field staff
- Analysis of filing, storage, and document tracking systems
- Development of prioritized recommendations
- Implementation support including training, tool development, and procurement guidance
- Reporting and documentation of improvements.
4. Expected Duration
8 weeks, commencing April 2026.
5. Qualifications
- Proven experience in data management, M&E systems, or records management
- Familiarity with community-based development and rural data collection challenges
- Knowledge of carbon standards (Gold Standard, Verra) is an advantage
- Strong analytical, report writing, and training skills
- Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an asset
