Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP’s presence in Malawi is aimed at supporting the country’s development agenda through various programmes and projects. The Data Management Support Officer will be instrumental in ensuring the effective collection, management, and utilization of data for UNDP Malawi’s programmes and operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programme and direct supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, the Data Management Support Officer will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Develop and maintain robust data management systems and databases for UNDP Malawi’s projects and programmes.
  • Ensure data quality, accuracy, and consistency through regular data validation and cleaning processes.
  • Support the collection of data from various sources, including field reports, surveys, and partner organizations.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data to inform programme planning, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Generate regular data reports and dashboards for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support and training to staff and partners on data management tools and best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of data management policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education:
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Information Technology, Computer Science, Statistics, Development Studies, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Experience:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in data management, database administration, or a related field.
  • Proven experience with data management software and tools (e.g., SQL, Excel, SPSS, R, Python).
  • Experience in developing and maintaining databases.
  • Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is an asset.
  • Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools is an advantage.
  • Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Chichewa is an asset.
