Background
The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) Limited is incorporated under the Companies Act of the Laws of Malawi. Its core business is to procure, transmit and distribute electric power in Malawi as well as manage System Market Operations and Single Buyer in Malawi.
Responsibilities
- Leading in creating, implementing, administering and enforcing policies, procedures and laws required for the Corporation to operate in accordance with the law and regulations.
- Carrying out Company Secretarial Services.
- Initiating and pursuing legal proceedings in the courts of law on behalf of the Corporation.
- Conducting legal research and preparing legal opinions on various legal matters.
- Participating in negotiations and drafting of national, regional and international Power Purchase/Supply Agreements.
- Drafting and/or reviewing legal contracts and monitoring legal obligations under such contracts.
- Providing advice on matters relating to statutory compliance by the corporation.
- Maintaining a database of the status of all court matters involving the Corporation for tracking legal matters and to strategize legal architecture of the Corporation.
- Liaising with and ensuring professional and diligent conduct of legal matters on behalf of the Corporation by Legal Practitioners under retainership agreements.
- Submitting reports in line with the reporting requirements on Key Performance Indicators.
- Representing the Corporation at arbitration hearings and in all matters before quasi-Judicial bodies.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree and a Master’s Degree in Law or Business Administration or Public Administration from a recognised and accredited institution.
- Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience with at least five (5) years at Management level in a legal environment.
- Valid practicing license.
- Registered with the Malawi Law Society.
- Experience in the power supply industry/energy sector shall be an added advantage.

Appointment and Remuneration
The successful candidate shall be offered a negotiable performance-related contract for a period of three (3) years subject to renewal on satisfactory performance.
