Background
The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) is a local Non-Governmental Organization established in 2001 and registered in Malawi in 2007. Since 2008, GAIA has partnered with the Ministry of Health and District Councils to bridge gaps in healthcare by improving access to quality health services in hard-to-reach communities through Mobile health clinics (MHC). Additionally, GAIA strengthens human resources for health through the provision of Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship and Midwifery Fellowship.
In 2026, GAIA is expanding into Nsanje District to bring essential primary health care services to hard-to-reach and underserved rural communities. The program’s expansion to Nsanje will reduce transport barriers for rural population living far off the fixed health facility, enhance local capacity and strengthen district partners to establish a robust, well-coordinated system of care for rural communities in the district.
Responsibilities
The Driver will be responsible for driving the clinic members of staff to various designated places (Clinics) on time and be responsible for the vehicle in all aspects.
- Making sure that vehicles are in good working conditions, clean and smart.
- Responsible for driving members of staff to different places for various programs.
- Ensuring that there is daily checking of oil gauge and water levels every morning before taking up errands.
- Submission of fuel reports and mileage covered on monthly basis.
- Checking and reporting for validity of vehicle documents such as Insurance and Certificate of Fitness (COF).
- Ensuring that fuel, vehicles and all equipment and materials on board are well managed, secured and safe during trips.
- Making sure the vehicles are serviced when due as scheduled.
- Ensuring that there is proper handover of vehicles under the approval of Management and handover report is acknowledged and signed by both drivers.
- Ensuring that accidents involving GAIA vehicles are reported to the nearest Police Station.
- Ensuring that the vehicle is always parked at the right place with maximum security available.
- Locking all the doors when leaving the vehicle and travelling at night.
- Carrying out any other duties assigned from time to time.
Qualifications and Competences
- Minimum qualification of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
- Valid Class C, C1, or CE Driving license with category PG.
- Knowledge and experience of driving Land Cruisers.
- Valid Defensive Driving Certificate.
- 3 to 5 years driving experience in reputable organizations, preferably in NGOs or healthcare settings.
- Experience in ambulance or emergency response services.
- Strong knowledge of road safety and traffic regulations.
- Good record keeping skills (logbooks and fuel usage).
- Ability to work in remote and challenging environments.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of responsibility, reliability, and professionalism.
- Must be willing to take on extra responsibilities and at times work longer hours.
