The Opportunity

Save the Children (SC) is seeking a Driver to support programme operations in Zomba and Ntcheu by providing safe, reliable, and efficient transport services. The role is critical in ensuring the smooth movement of staff, partners, consultants, supplies, and equipment in support of Save the Children’s programmes.

The Driver will be responsible for operating Save the Children vehicles in line with organisational transport policies, maintaining vehicle logbooks, conducting routine vehicle checks, and reporting any faults, incidents, or maintenance needs. The role also includes supporting minor vehicle repairs and undertaking basic clerical duties such as filing departmental documents.

Under the direct supervision of the Fleet Coordinator, the Driver will interact with staff across functional areas and occasionally with external partners, ensuring that all journeys are properly authorised and conducted safely, professionally, and efficiently.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and adjust working hours accordingly.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
  • Clean and valid driving licence.
  • Defensive Driving Certificate.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience driving vehicles in a busy organisation.
  • Proven knowledge of vehicle logbooks, record keeping, and basic vehicle management procedures.
  • Ability to prioritise assignments and work with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills, including use of word processing and spreadsheet packages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and partners.

Desirable

  • Experience working with NGOs.
  • Certificate in motor vehicle servicing and repairing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe and responsible use of the vehicle assigned at all times.
  • Undertake only authorised journeys approved by the appropriate managers.
  • Comply with all Save the Children driving rules, transport policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct daily and weekly vehicle checks as outlined in the vehicle logbook.
  • Complete vehicle logbooks and related documentation accurately on a daily basis.
  • Report all vehicle faults, maintenance needs, accidents, or incidents promptly to the Logistics/Fleet Coordinator.
  • Ensure the vehicle is clean, well equipped, roadworthy, and adequately fuelled before each journey.
  • Ensure all equipment, including spare tyres and tools, is present and in good working condition.
  • Safely pack, secure, and transport supplies and equipment with the correct accompanying documentation.
  • Support minor vehicle repairs and perform basic clerical duties, including filing, when required.
