1. General Information
K&G Engineering and Services is a petroleum-focused engineering company engaged in fuel pump installation and maintenance, tank infrastructure development, and electrical and mechanical systems integration. The company seeks a qualified Electronics Technician to support petroleum pump systems, working closely with the Pump Technician to ensure reliable and safe fuel station operations.
2. Position Purpose
The Electronics Technician – Petroleum is responsible for installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronic systems associated with fuel dispensers, pump controllers, automation interfaces, and related petroleum infrastructure.
The role supports the Pump Technician in ensuring accurate pump calibration, system integration, electronic diagnostics, and overall operational efficiency of petroleum dispensing systems.
3. Reporting Structure
Reports To:
- Projects and Maintenance Engineer
- Maintenance & Operations Manager
Works Closely With:
- Pump Technician
- Petroleum General Fitters
- Welding & Fabrication Technicians
- Safety Officer
- Site Supervisors and Client Representatives
4. Key Duties and Responsibilities
4.1 Installation & Commissioning
- Install and configure electronic components of fuel dispensers and pump control systems.
- Connect and program pump interface boards, communication modules, and control units.
- Conduct functional testing and assist in commissioning of fuel dispensing systems.
4.2 Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and repair electronic faults in dispensers, control boards, displays, and sensors.
- Troubleshoot communication failures between pumps, controllers, and monitoring systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance on electronic systems of petroleum infrastructure.
- Support calibration of electronic meters and pump accuracy systems.
- Respond promptly to breakdown calls and support the Pump Technician during field repairs.
4.3 Pump & Tank Electronic Systems
- Monitor and troubleshoot electronic leak detection systems.
- Test and verify pump display units, pulser systems, and data transmission components.
- Assist in upgrading firmware and configuring system parameters where required.
- Support electronic integration of new pumps and tank systems during installations.
4.4 Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure all electronic installations meet petroleum safety standards.
- Verify proper cable management and secure mounting of electronic components.
- Conduct pre-commissioning electronic diagnostics and validation tests.
- Maintain accurate service reports and fault records.
4.5 Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Follow strict safety procedures in hazardous petroleum environments.
- Observe lockout/tagout procedures when working with powered systems.
- Use intrinsically safe tools where required.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, fuel leaks, or electrical hazards.
4.6 Documentation & Reporting
- Record diagnostics, software configurations, and repair actions taken.
- Document spare parts used and submit requisitions for approvals.
- Provide daily and weekly technical reports to supervisors.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs for each assigned site.
5. Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge
5.1 Academic and Professional Qualifications
- MSCE (Malawi School Certificate of Education)
- Grade 1 Trade Test Certificate in Electronics, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, or related field
- OR
- Diploma in Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
5.2 Experience
- Minimum 3–7 years’ experience in electronics installation and maintenance.
- Proven experience working with fuel dispensers, pump electronics, or industrial control systems is an added advantage.
- Experience with automation systems, sensors, and control boards.
- Experience in hazardous area environments is an advantage.
5.3 Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of electronic control boards and pump interface systems.
- Knowledge of tank gauging systems and fuel management systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Basic knowledge of networking and communication protocols used in fuel stations.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and collaborate effectively with the Pump Technician.
