Background

CMG is a Leading Malawian owned Coal Mining Company that is based in Karonga at Pusi and it operates at Kasantha. The company has been in operation for over 5 years. It is a registered by the Government of Malawi and is currently employing more than 200 Malawians.

The Company seeks to recruit experienced and motivated individuals to fill the following new positions. The following are the requirements for the ideal candidate. Those with Mining experience will have an added advantage.

Position: Environmentalist

Reporting: The Managing Director

Qualifications and Experience

The applicants should have at least a Degree in Environmental Studies from a NCHE recognized University.

Those with not less than five years’ experience in Environmental Management and monitoring mining Projects especially coal or similar projects will have an added advantage.

Applicants should be registered with relevant local bodies and be members of the same, and be conversant with Malawi Government policies and legal frame work related to environmental safeguards and World Bank policies on Environmental Standards.Local business partnerships

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Compliance & Licensing: Manage the “enviro-legal” processes required for projects, ensuring the mine holds and adheres to all necessary licenses, such as Water Use Licenses (IWUL) and environmental authorizations.
  • Monitoring & Testing: Conduct regular sampling and analysis of air, water, and soil quality to ensure pollutants remain within permitted levels. This often involves monitoring dust, light spill, vibration, and sound.
  • Impact Mitigation: Develop and implement Environmental Management Programmes (EMP) to address and reduce negative impacts like acid mine drainage, methane emissions, and habitat destruction.
  • Waste Management: Organize the collection, separation, and legal disposal of various waste types, including hazardous materials and mine tailings.
  • Land Rehabilitation: Lead the reforestation and revegetation of mined land to restore it to a stable, usable, or natural state once mining activities conclude.
  • Auditing & Reporting: Perform regular site inspections and internal environmental audits. Also prepare formal reports for regulatory bodies and internal management.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Act as a point of contact for government regulators, NGOs, and local communities regarding environmental concerns and sustainability initiatives.
  • Training: Conduct environmental awareness programs to ensure all mine employees understand the environmental risks associated with their specific tasks.
